Downriggers are used by anglers to take their lures to a depth that wouldn't be possible without the use of large amounts of weight. A downrigger is a weight attached to a line. Lures are attached to clips on the downrigger weight and the whole is lowered to the chosen depth. When the fish grabs the lure the clip releases the the line for the angler to play the fish back to the boat.

Most have a hand clutch/winch to lower /raise. An electric downrigger uses a motor instead of the handle.
