Last year we bought a 37 foot belmore sloop called Electron of Portsea launched in 1960 designed by John Illinworth for HMS Collinwood as a training yacht, does any body know this yacht any history/photos would be great.
I sailed on her little sister, Meg of Portsea, a Westerly 22. That was back in '73 when I was doing my leading electricians course and we had an instructor LT who didn't go home to Rhyl every weekend so a couple of us got to play in the Solent. I think Electron used to do the channel crossings most weekends as far as I remember but we weren't allowed near unless it was to clean her.
I was the third owner of Electron and had her for thirteen years. Wished I had never sold her. Did loads of work including new engine, keel bolts, roller furling headsail etc etc. Sailed out of Dover and over the years did from Amsterdam to the Channel Islands.I raced her as well also lived on her overwinter in St Catherine's dock. I will send you a private message; have loads of photos obviously.
You are probably aware that she is the sister ship of Belmore and Meon Maid. Belmore features in Illingworths book 'Offshore'.
My first channel crossing (1965) was in this yacht - a never to be forgotten experience as a predicted NE 5-6 ended up as NE 9-10. Ran into Alderney and after anchor failed to hold moored up to Burhou the 75ft MFV used to service Casquets lighthouse.
Electron proved her total seaworthiness and handled the conditions far better than her crew managed!
