EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System)

The European Space Agency originally announced that WAAS/EGNOS would launch April 2004. It is now the end of October but no more appears to have been announced.

1 Are they playing quiet because it does not work and much public money has been spent?

2 Has it started but they have neglected to announce the fact?

3 If it has started has anyone used it and noticed an improved accuracy in positioning?

My Navman Tracker 5500 instructions say not to enable WAAS until it is operating as this would reduce accuracy.

Any ESA forumite like to comment?

WAAS and EGNOS are regional implementations of SBAS (sat based augmentation systems). WAAS is the US version, EGNOS European.

WAAS is operational, EGNOS is still in test mode (ESTB = EGNOS system Test Bed). Check status here .

Don't use or enable EGNOS until declared operational. If in US waters, enable WAAS now.

I've looked "here" but an empty graph tells me nothing!

My real questions above are meaning "Why the delay?" It's well after April 2004. If the Yanks can do it with WAAS why can't ESA do it with EGNOS

To be fair, I won't be afloat again until April 2005 but hope it will be working then.

Re: EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overl

Cos Egnos is a new system, Waas has been operational for a while (and took just as long to get into operation) They are test bedding, and while it works off and on, is not trustworthy while it's tested as signals are intermiitent. You can check online to see when signals are being transmitted and when trustworthy, but plain answer is not to use until online completely. If you want an answer as to when online fulltime - prob email them, best bet is a few months yet

Activating EGNOS?

A few months ago, a forumite indicated that to activate EGNOS on EGNOS-enabled Raymarine receivers, you had to key in a 'secret' code via the display buttons.

Anyone know what to do?

Re: Activating EGNOS?

Raymarine haven't issued one yet I believe and some devices (like our plotter they told me) may not be able to do it, so the GPS may need to go to Raymarine for it to be done. Navman have it sussed, we can switch it on/off in the menu, currently if 'on' it will work a while then beep to say no WAAS dGPS, then beep to say WAAS on again. We have it switched off.

Re: Activating EGNOS?

Raymarine C-Series plotters also have simple menu SDGPS (either EGNOS or WAAS) on/off. Actually I have had mine enabled since July without any observed problems. Didn't go anywhere I wasn't completely familiar with so less of a risk. I found the position accuracy did improve slightly, but you really only notice it when looking at your position on the marina pontoon (assuming they are accurately surveyed of course!).
