Hi,

I will be using it to clean the brown crud from near the waterline and I wondered if anyone here can anyone tell me whether oxalic acid will adversely effect a painted boot top ?

Thanks,

Boo2

I use Y10 (which is oxalic acid) every year and some inevitably gets wiped onto the boot-topping but it doesn't affect it at all.

More annoying is that the Blakes boot-topping paint I have been using is soft and gets smeared onto the topsides by any wet cloth or crane slings.

Blakes/Hempel have had a problem with their Dark blue boot topping. It should be much harder and not wipe off with the slightest brushing.

Used it last year and after a few scrubs it was back to bare GF.

Oxalic acid no problem with Boot top.

Y10 expensive in comparison to Plasplugs heavy duty tile and grout cleaner available from the big orange sheds.

This contains dilute Phosphoric acid and did the job for me on removing diesel, rust and scum stains from the top sides. I still have all my fingers and thumbs the paint is as good as new and the boot top and AF were unaffected.

Thanks to all for the answers, can anyone say how much diluted oxalic acid I'm likely to need for a 34' yacht ? Ditto antifouling actually, and primer while I'm here... :D

Thanks,

I'm not one for spending money where it's unnecessary, but making your own oxalic acid preparation just isn't worth the trouble, IMHO. I have owned my boat for more than 15 years, keep it clean and white, and in that time I have bought two plastic tubs of oxalic-based cleaning stuff. One was Boatlife teak cleaner, lasted about eight years, maybe cost £10. The other is about half used, don't know who made it, it's called Hull Cleaner or something similar, came in a yellow tub and cost about £7. It only takes a tiny amount of these products to clean hull and deck.

Once you have chosen your paints etc the manufacturers provide instructions on how to calculate the quantities required. It varies from paint to paint as coverage rates differ so follow the instructions - at least first time around.
