Just disassembled my Edson wheel pedestal, steering very tight, assumed bearings where u/s and they where. Found the bearings where a plain "plastic" (nylon) bearing. The Edson website gives not info on these bearings, only show a needle bearing. Looking to replace these bearing either with a "oilite" (sintered bronze bearing) or a similar plastic bearing. The bearing size seems to be a standard imperial bearing size so can get direct replacements. Looking for advice on which way to go as regards material choice if anyone has had a similar problem.

Is it possible that a previous owner fitted plastic bearings rather than proper needle bearings? If so, perhaps you should refit needle bearings.

I agree. We also have an Edson wheel pedestal and I serviced it a while ago using Edson parts. All available at very reasonable prices. It sounds as though someone thought they knew better when yours was last done. Ours works very well with the needle bearings...
