Edible prop?

There have been a number of prponents of adding chilli powder to antifouling and some claim that it repells barnacles. I wonder if anyone has tried loading lanolin with chilli as an improved prop treatment? At the very least, melting the mix should build up a good appetite.

there was a recent reply on here which stated that only mammals react to the active parts of chilli, so no it would not work

...and lanolin doesn't stay on for very long, so neither would the chilli.

Hi

I used "zeeboo" which is the stuff they used to polish old cast iron cookers and fires. It used to be black lead but is now graphite. I polished the prop to a fine finish and then applied 3 or 4 coats (which turned the pop black)

We lifted the boat in November after 18 months in the water the hull was very bad with weed, shells and animals up to inches long however virtualy nothing on the prop !

The main problem with graphite is that it is a conductor and occupies the most noble position in the galvanic series in seawater. Any metal will be corroded preferentially when in contact with it. Spiral wound pipework gaskets used to use it but they are generally banned in water systems nowadays as they cause corrosion of the flanges.
