I am very new to EDC's and getting used to two of them them has been fun after coming from a single engine non-edc boat.

I understand the "=" button in that it is to equalise the rev's on both engines - should this be on all the time even when manouvering or only when at cruising speed - also do you have to be in neutral to engage it or can you be at speed.

I was not using it the other day and then pressed it at about 2500 rpm and the engines seemed to rev up and down for a bit which was a bit odd. Also when it was not engaged i had both throttles at the same place but the rev gauge showed about 250rpm difference.

Any advice or tips on how EDC's should correctly be used would be great. (normal crusing rpm is 3300)

thanks

On mine the "=" is on all the time.

The EDC controls are synchrinised by the port hand throttle which has potentiometer/actuator that regulates the rpm on both port/stbd engines.

I have been told that you can actuaute both engines from the one throttle lever a la Rexroth, but you can't.... do not know if you can with the latest EVC controls.

When manouvering you would surely only be using one engine at a time, so the sync is not an issue.

Actual throttle position (relative to each other) is irrelevant and does not mean equivalent RPM.. even with the sync switched in.

At least on my boat that is.

Derf, isn't your boat EVC not EDC? They are very different.

I have not driven EDC, only EVC. On EVC the synch is automatic, no = button. On EDC I thort you had to (a) be above a certain rpm like 1200 or summink and (b) have the two sticks roughly level positionwise. Then you press = and the engines synch and the blue LED lights up.

But there are folks with EDC on here who might know better

On EVC, the engines will sync if each engine is within 250 rpm of each other at any rpm after a set period. Once you move the trottles in any direction it disengages, there are no buttons to push just a blue = sign at the bottom of the panel.

You are almost right.
Yes you have to be above certain revs (I think 1000 or 1200)
Yes the throttles have to be similar (within 200 RPM)
The sync is ON by default. You have to press the = button to turn OFF

I prefer to turn it off when I start, and when I return to a marina, just to make sure it does not do anything I am not expecting when travelling slowly.

Eek I didn't know there were 2 generations. EVC was only introduced autumn 2003.

There is the original software that didn't work, and now the new software that works better and has been retroinstalled on the autumn2003- spring2004 engines (including ours) that were shipped with the original dodgy software
