echosounder transducer fitting to hull

I have bought a navman fishfinder but it came with a external stern mounting transducer and sailing today (other sailing magazines are available!!!!) ran a test of fishfinders in may and I read these transducers can be fixed to the inside of the hull. Anyone done this , what is the best way? I think you can use a liquid gel to make an airtight seal against the hull surface.

I have done it. Stuck it on with Blue Tack, to find out if it would work through the hull. It works down to about 21 metres below the hull. Blue Tack cuts the signal because it is flexible and soft. Having found a suitable spot on the hull with Blue Tack you need either to fit a piece of tube to the hull and put the transducer in to it immersed in oil, or stick it down with epoxy or polyester resin. That is one of the jobs I have on my "to do" list.

If using resin how do you stop any bubbles forming, which will degrade the signal?

When the time comes please tell me what did you use and what the outcome is. I also have 19 meters of sounding after using a "temporary" silicon fix!

Raymarine supply epoxy putty to afix the "Puck" ( transducer) in hull

Only way is to stir in the hardener very gently or use one of the two part putty products.

yep, mine is stuck down to the inside of a ply/epoxy hull with bath sealant and works !

What about a wooden hull?

Can't do an internal fit on a wooden hull - air in the fibres or something like that interferes with the signal.

but perhaps it only works in a thin / good quality ply wood & epoxy hull ??
too much air certainly stops it working
