Can an accidental dollop of antifoul on the echosounder transducer cause it to stop working?

And if so, how best to remove the antifoul (boat is still on the hard for a couple of days).

Thanks
I had the same problem last year, doubtful that a/foul causes it. I simply fitted a new in-hull new transducer adjacent the faulty through hull transducer. Inexpensive and easy.

Shouldn't do.

Worth starting with re-making all the connectors.

Seem to remember discussions of solvent on some echo sounders on here though. Perhaps worth checking the manual.

Humminbird recently told me that they didn't like AF on their transducers but in fairness this is with a pair of mega side scan transducers. I managed to read through 6 inches of weed though.

Have you stuck your head in the bilge. If it is working you should be able to hear it click. No click=no works.

I’ve never had a transducer that worked properly on dry land, but I’ve painted loads with thick A/F and they all worked when afloat

Funny thing is, it's dissapeared from the NMEA 2K network.
Even more odd, it's one of those combined log/echosounder transducers and the log still shows up on the network.
Bit a loss really.

I have no experience with the electromagnetic log transducers and antifoul, and have never seen one combined with a sounder, my sounders have all been separate. Had I known there was an electromagnetic log sensor involved too I wouldn’t have posted. The sounder part of the transducer will be ok with the AF, others will have useful knowledge about the log and AF.

I still wouldn’t expect the sounder to have any meaningful readout through air, but I would assume it should be present on the N2k, unless the system is clever enough to not display data it assumes to be unreliable or wrong

Just a question .... Where does OP say what type of sounder it is ??

The OPjhas not said it does not work, just asking if A/F could cause it not to work. My answer is probably not. to remove the A/F just soft with a little thinners and gently scape the A/F off the transducer

Going back to the OP:
A thin film of hard antifoul should not be a problem, I used to apply such each season and now have a film of Coppercoat without any noticable loss of range/sensitivity. A thick dollop of soft antifoul may be a problem if it contains micro bubbles or voids as these will absorb the sound pulse. I would suggest that you carefully scrape off any excess to just leave a thin film over the transducer face.

I saw that ... but I would class my Echopilot Duo as combined ... as its dual display ... but transducers are separate.
I’m not aware of a combined log/sounder transducer, just reading the post literally. It does make more sense if the transducers are separate, especially as the depth transducer part isn’t showing on the N2k

+1 for the audible click ashore, though I have to get up close and friendly. Mine also read 0 ashore , though once splashed comes to life . One each side, one measuring water total and one with keel offset. Have always applied AF .
