CAN ANYONE HELP ? IS IT PRACTICAL TO INSTALL A FISHFINDER INSTEAD OF A DEPTH SOUNDER ON A SAILING
BOAT? AND HOW MUCH POWER DO THEY CONSUME AS AGAINST THE LOW POWER OF A ECHO SOUNDER .THE FISH FINDER SOUNDS GOOD WITH ADDED ADVANTAGES,I HAVE AN INBOARD ENGINE BUT BEING A SAILING BOAT IT IS NOT ON A LOT OF THE TIME....................

there will be differences in units amongst fishfinders - larger screens and more powerfull transducer beams will increase consumption.

However a basic unit such as the one Phil indicates (note the Blue designation denotes increased power though) shouldn't be too much more than a 'sounder', and as an added bonus are pretty cheap - units were available sub 100 at Excel.

I personally feel the aditional info very usefull and worth the amperage costs long term - you don't have to leave it switched on all the time either!

Can be run from a small simple gell cell battery about 7AH, [salvaged from an alarm system in my case], it goes for ages if you only turn it when you need it. Take the battery home for recharging. Big problem is the transducer will give a variable finding if the sailing vessel is healed over. I have a transducer mounted on a broom stick type of arrangement an put it over the side and clamp it at at a vertical angle when I need to use it, or else get one of the crew to hold it by hand.
