I nearly fired mine up last weekend just to make sure it was working ... but couldn't be arsed... I'll try next time we over-night though.

RTFM ! Fire it up for 30 mins once a month to save megabucks on repairs. Actually, they don't repair them, they just replace half the inside and charge accordingly.

We bought it in september/october 06, ran it up in the garage for 5 minutes (any longer and we would've died from CO poisoning!) then it didn't run it up again till it was fitted in the boat - March 07 ... worked fine!

Why does it need running up 30 minutes every month? What is that achieving? Does the installation location make a difference to the requirement?

Don't just follow manuals blindly .... question why they specify maintenance schedules the way they do ... sometimes they're right, sometimes I believe over cautious!

Eberspacher dealers on teh UK south coast recomend this process. The various components can clog and gunk over time if not regularly run.

I guess the occasional initial puff of smoke's indicative of the [--word removed--] burning off as it ignites.

Replacement parts are expensive and they even recomend annually removing the unit for a service.

Personally I fire it up at least once a month. You wouldn't leave a car in the garage unattended for 9 months and expect everything to be tickaty-boo?

Maybe it's just me...

Something that is not moving in an enclosed unit will clog and gunk over time? Even a short time like 6 months? What gets clogged?
The glow plug is just that - a plug that glows ... no moving parts there.
What else?

seems sensible... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just hate reasonless instructions ... hence I could never be in the forces.

There are only 2 situations when I heed reasonless instructions -
1) When racing and a trusted crew/helm calls a tack/gybe
2) When SWMBO tells me to do something in "that tone" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

run my weekly for 30 minutes and every day through the winter and never a problem in 4 years These devices were made to be used on a regular basis. By using them you are helping to keep them free from damp and deposit build up. At least when it does pack up it should be from using it rather than not using it!

You'll be pleased to know that I fired it up this afternoon whilst motoring around the harbour ... after about 1.5 months of being idle ... absolutely fine! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was taught to run all systems on boats on a regular basis, heaters, windlasses, sea cocks, MOB lights etc etc. Basically if its got an on/off mode work it. That way you find out that it's working or not at a non critical time.
This does not apply to Eberbastos as by Sodde's law they only break down when temp is 5° or below.
