Sorry if this has been asked 1000000 times before but I have just purchased a secondhand 12v heater and there are a few matters I wish to ask you good folk.
When mounted does it matter at what angle the exhaust protrudes. ie top or bottom. Also there is a ss exhaust thru hull fitting which has a 20 degree angle is this fitted so the gasses have to travel down hill to escape thus keeping rain and splashes out. It seems strange to have hot gasses flowing down hill.
what is the recomended material to use between exhaust and thru hull fitting.
Is it normal to smoke like a train before chamber fires up then it becomes ok.
Thanks

Yes, the exhaust (and combustion air inlet) should ideally be on the bottom of the heater although the heater will run so long as the glow plug is on the upper side.

This is correct. The exhaust should exit the boat down-wards to help keep water out of the exhaust. The hot gasses are blown out also you should arrange a swan neck in the exhaust bringing the loop in the exhaust as high as possible if you cannot slope the exhaust from the heater downwards to the skin fitting. A drain at the low point of the exhaust is also a good idea if using a swan neck arrangement.

Don't know but I used sikaflex based on the fact the through hull fitting is insulated and if the temperature got too high one would burn the GRP. So far no problems.

Not really although mine did for a while until I cleaned the glow plug and that cured the smoke although there is a light grey "vapour" emitted just before she fires up but no smoke. Depending on which model of heater you acquired you may need a length (~3' of ~1" Ø) of rubber hose on the combustion air inlet to balance the system. If this is not fitted the heater can sound like a steam train (chuffing and blowing smoke) before it starts or should I say IF it starts

Sealant for through hull exhaust fitting as specified by Eberspacher is Silicone, I can't remember if it is the high or low modulus type though, this is important as the fitting gets quite hot.

Exhaust to thru-hull....

I'm probably wrong (seems to happen increasingly), but I read your question as asking what sort of material to use for the exhaust pipe. If that's so, you should use a flexible metal pipe with insulation to stop the heat damaging the boat. Eberspacher have some stainless pipe lagged with woven fibreglass, and this is the right stuff to use. Some people slide a length of metal air ducting over this pipe when installing it to make a neater finish.
