...and no, not a grumpy marinas thread! Simple question...how much do you use yours?

Confession time...I had an extended weekend, and ran mine non-stop from Friday night to Tuesday evening. Never really used it much before, but for a nice weekend of Solent pub-hopping it was simply invaluable. With a bit of marina/river entrance donkey time and the BM1 showing the numbers there was enough juice in the battery to keep it running, which we did even when under sail. It was great to be able to nip below for 10 mins to thaw out...and the headlining/insulation job I did over the summer meant it never came off minimum setting...great bit of kit.

So how much do you use yours?

We once turned ours on when in Kiel and turned it off on the Isle of Wight!

No need to feel guilty.

One of the best things i ever bought, makes winter sailing comfortable (and even possible). Usually run it all night but not in the day if sailing, if in port then all the time.

I have just installed one on my Sabre27, hopefully it will get loads of use. I don't see the point in not using it having spent a fortune on buying it

I use it lots, and the later models use far less electricity. I installed a new Airtronic D4, 18 months ago replacing the one fitted when the boat was new, twenty years before.

Whilst I dont have one on any of the boats I sail (either small day boats..or at the other end ships with AC and raditors!) I have one on my campervan. When Mrs Dharl and self went away for a weekend recently we had it on full time when at the campsite. Lovely and toasty. Whilst we where on electric hook up and so didnt notice the power use on this occasion, I do know it is very economicaly to use. Howeevr from outside the van it is very loud and sounds like a Helicoptor is taking off!

Good...so not just me then.

Confession time...having hardly used it before I didn't know that if you turn the thermostat right down, after a minute or two the fan goes to a lower setting. Makes a huge difference on noise, a bit on power consumption, and TBH is perfectly warm enough too!

Winter sailing with heat on in the cabin is magical.

I did wonder whether I should put an extra outlet just under the helm's seat ...

Possibly with an umbilical hose to plug in the bottom of the waterproof trousers ... ;)

We've installed two so far - one on the last boat, one on this .. they are not difficult to install, just takes time ...

Mine was a bit dodgy and I posted often on here about it. However, last year I spent the money and sent it way for a proper service and it came back a beauty. I used it few times last year on cold winter sailing days and I cannot believe the difference it made to crew morale. It made going to the loo a luxurious treat when you are wet and cold!

I am now semi-livingaboard in marina with plenty of shore-power, so I use plug in oil filled rads. I am conscious of the noise of the unit in the marina so wouldn't put it on at dawn, but I have put it on after 8am when we are showering and getting ready for work because it keep the boat really dry and it really is fantastic.

As previous poster said, whack it on high for 15 mins to get the temp up, then turn it down to minimum and the noise really reduces.

Run a gas pipe up the backstay. Modify a patio heater onto a gimbal. Plumb the other end to a gas tank in a transom locker.

OK, only joking. The girls and some guests would love it though, even if it's about the most unseamanlike thing I can conceive of making!

Eberspaecher gets used in autumn/ winter with sensitivity to any marina neighbours, to make for a comfortable evening for the family after a day's sail.

When it broke last weekend (think I need to bleed it as I'd run the diesel tank low and the Eberspaecher's feed from it is well above the bottom of the tank) I was grateful to use a marina berth with electricity, and plug in a small electric blow heater down below to keep everyone happy.

Just wondering are they easy to install or have installed in an existing boat?

No, it is a big job even on boats like mine that had pre-cut holes for ducting through the bulkheads. Five solid weekends.

I don't get why there's this thing about marina neighbours. Mine is a little noisy inside the cabin...basically you can tell there's something with an electric motor in it bolted a a bulkhead, but the noise outside is barely audible, a very low whoosh that pales into insignificance compared to just the wind in a rig...let alone any slapping halyards or wind generators on overdrive (both highly antisocial!)

Mines a D1LC...is this smaller than others or something? It's a pretty basic installation so I can't see that great care has been paid to acoustics, why are some noticeably louder?

Mine is noisier than expected at the exhaust, sounds like a small jet engine. I now know what the noises on other boats around the marina is. Mine is a d2

We use ours lots too. Installed last year and its made autumn comfy and winter sailing possible with a young family.

We are on a swing mooring so not too worried about the noise as i dont have a silencer on mine at the moment but im looking into this. For some reason mine seems to be less noisy than others, on one still night i could here another boats running over mine!

One of the best upgrades we did to the boat. We've left ours running over night when onboard...:o
