Eberspacher silencing-how much of a difference does it make?

anyone noticed a marked reduction in noise after fitting in-line silencers to an Eberspacher installation. just wondering if the investment is worth it. my current set-up is so noisy I'm going to feel embarrassed firing it up when there are neighbours close by.

Thanks for your time

Well worth the trouble. I can't hear my heater when sat in the cockpit with exhaust outlet only 3 feet away. It is a Webasto though the principles are the same.

If you want one ive got one spare, 24mm outlets, used.
£15, cut the pipe, slip it in and a couple of clamps, easy peasy.

Silencing either Eberspachers, or Webastos as well as possible is imperative.

But in my experience, where I have said to each of my heating engineers that budget is not an issue, it's always quieter with each additional silencer, but it could always be better.

We have had silencers fitted to the boilers, the fan matrices outlets, the pipework throughout the boat, and then finally relocated the latest hydronic boiler in a soundproof box in the furthest bit of the engine compartment.

And guess what? The current one is still too noisy in spite of applying everything learned in previous installations.

I think that marine boilers are all too noisy and the manufacturers are doing a poor job.

Whinge over, and point made I hope.

Cheers

Well worth the effort, but not the standard little sepeate flat ones designed for trucks, I have found the Mikuni one to be far and away the most effective but it's big (about 10cm dia X 40cm long for the 28mm exhaust tube model), it comes complete with about 2m of exhaust tubing to which it is welded and sealed. A combustion air silencer is probably the biggest pound for pound improvement.

I'd also recommend a "process air silencer", fitted in the hot air ducting immediately after the heater. It greatly reduces fan noise inside the boat. My Eberspacher is almost silent in operation inside the boat.

I used the straight through type of silencer for the exhaust from a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine, slightly modified to accomodate the exhaust tubing.
It works great and an awfull lot cheaper than the Webersplutter one.

If you are at anchor, I'd be very surprised if it is so loud that it annoys your neighbours - especially since if you need the heater they are likely themselves to be below deck.

If you are in a marina with shore power, why not just use a fan heater?

Noise WITHIN your own boat from the heater is a different matter entirely.
