Hi, I have aquired a second hand eberspacher 3 Air heater which needs a bit of servicing. I might do it myself, but if anyone has had some great experiences with any service agents then I will be very interested.. it seems to be all doom and gloom!

It isn't doom and gloom. It is a sophisticated heater requiring servicing at 6-monthly intervals. If you choose to buy a cheap second-hand one, good for you. But get in touch with a local service agent, or buy one that you can service yourself.

All the manuals for the above can be downloaded from the espar website, available on this forum if you search. I cannot remember the links myself, but they are not difficult to find.

If you are unsure about taking such an animal apart, get proper help and make sure your installation is CORRECT in the first place. It is not an easy installation and there are DIRE consequences of a "gash" installation without the correct advice, on-site. You risk fire, CO poisoning or, at least, heater failure within a few weeks.

If this is a serious post, feel free to PM me, but the general advice remains the same.

I'm pretty engineering minded. but with all things of such nature, it's a lot of hassle aquainting oneself with the system. I guess it needs to be done eventually, but I'm tempted to get it serviced professionally first, then do future servicing myself.

Boat is in portsmouth (for the moment), I live in Central London, and have family in Essex. Or could post to someone elsewhere.

Really?

I think you're in danger of seriously overstating the position. Eberspacher heaters in normal leisure boat use certainly do not need servicing every 6 months. With more intensive use, servicing might be needed sooner, but I can't imagine a 6-monthly service need. Mine gets a fair bit of use and it hasn't been touched since I serviced it about 6 years ago.

The man to speak to is Malcolm Morling who lives on board at Haslar
He is wizz with all things mechanical and has a good reputation for fixing heaters
He will probably charge you a lot less than most.

I observed that Alistairc has 22 posts and may be a new boater, so my advice is sound. An ebesp..everb...whatever, is a dangerous beast in the hands of the uneducated. I want to instill a fear of such things until he reaches the dizzy heights of the experienced user like yourself. I am prepared to help him by PM, as advertised in my post to him. No harm intended, but hopefully he will regard his heater with the right amount of respect, septically if he is doing it all himseslfff..

slurrrr, slurr. Honey, pass me the lagavulin!

Re: Really?

I would take a minute before jumping to the conlusion that posting a message here makes you a better boater!
I only found this forum recently /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm always open to advice though.

Then don't talk DOWN to him ...

Spouting out crap like it needs servicing every 6 months does NOT HELP! It undermines anything you might say afterwards .... as a new owner of an older Eberspacher D1LC I read these posts with interest hoping that a I can gain hints and tips for the time that I know I'll need to take the beast apart ... and before you evaluate my technical ability - I've re-engined an MG, rebuilt computers (hardware and software) and stripped, cleaned and rebuilt saxophones & flutes ... all work after I finish with them! Mind you - they worked (of sorts) before as well! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ok, That's not really what I meant. I have no claim to being a better boater at all, and anyway that is highly unlikely.

I just want to make sure your installation is safe.

As I said originally, PM me if you want MY advice, but I am equally happy to add my tuppence worth in open forum!

Sophisticated?

I couldn't think of a simpler design. I service my own eberspacher, and with intensive live-aboard winter use only need to de carbon it every couple of years.

You can buy the service parts from Colchester Fuel Injection, for example.

He's a simple fellow .... he gets confused when trying to service a ball point pen! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Really?

Thanks, you've just re-proved my "everyone involved in boating is pretty decent" mentality!
as far as I read the most important thing with those heaters is to take the tap after the separator and include a dedicted fuel filter.

Re: Really?

Fireball, AND pvc

Sigh.

"Spouting out crap like it needs servicing every 6 months does NOT HELP! It undermines anything you might say afterwards"

I am quoting the eberdoodah sevicing manyal, and thinking that I should take no further part in this shite. Blimey, I can't even spell proply now.

Alistair, sorry if I have caused you some distress, but I will refrain from taking part for a while and see what you think. The morning will bring lots of better advice than mine, it seems, and you can make your choice from there.

I am really quite on your "side", and will respond if required.

Re: Really?

No offence taken by anyone!
Lets see where this goes, but my original question was; does anyone have an eberspacher server that they trust. (apart from the one at haslar mentioned earlier) Cheers
Ali

p.s. When is this crap weather going to end, I want to go sailing!

[/ QUOTE ] Interesting, I've never seen an Eberspacher manual which gives a recommended service interval.

Re: Really?

Then perhaps you should've preceeded your quote with - the Eberdoodahwatsit states ....

Incidentally - I've not read that service interval in my manual either - I'll take another look ...
