Up until last night i had no problems with the eberspacher D1LC i fittted last week.

Now, when it starts up it fires, but within about 10 seconds as the motor speeds up it sounds like it goes out. There is white smoke comming out the exhaust which confirms that it has gone out.

Any ideas on what to do anyone?

When you first install an Eber it sometimes "false starts" and shuts down several times due to air in the fuel line. Ensure you have a clean fuel supply and nothing has blocked the pipe or the filter on the pump intake and try again. If your fuel has been sitting around all winter you may have picked up sludge from the tank.

I don't want to come over as sounding like an expert... because I am certainly not.
However, I had similar problems with a D1L which may give a pointer. The beast would fire up for a few minutes, belch white smoke and then stop.
I took the thing home and set up in the garage with a bit of copper pipe on the exhaust and just a short rubber elbow pipe on the combustion inlet. Result... perfect performance running for an hour or so.
Back on the boat and onto the SS exhaust... would not run for more than ten minutes. More white smoke. Check for air in fuel supply. Check fuel filter on meter pump. Check voltage. Same result.
Re-read the instruction book and noted the need to balance the exhaust with the combustion air-in pipe. Took the short elbow off and replaced with a bit of pipe same length of the exhaust - problem solved.
If your unit fired with a roar like an athsmatic steam train, this might be the problem.
Now... can anyone explain why it would run unbalanced in the garage at home?

I do not think there is any air in the fuel as it has been running alot for the last week so hopefully all is bleed out. I will check the filter and diesel.

I have a small racor filter that i may fit to help keep the diesel clean. The pumps are small though so would it be best on the inlet or pressure side?

Mine has started doing the same thing.
It has worked fine for about 10 months. Now it fires up and then goes out within about ten seconds.
I took the glow plug out and cleaned it but still no go so it might need a major clean out. Mine has run all that time with no pipe on the inlet but maybe that has caused it to soot up so quick. If I come up with a solution I'll let you know.

Who knows the secret of the black magic box????

Last night i changed the exhaust, the glowplug, the mesh screen and the batteries and still no joy.

Im going to completely dismantle the heater and check for carbon buildup and see if that makes it (finally) work.

I have found the cause of the problem!

The fuel pump fitted to my heater was the wrong one so it was over-fuelling and causing soot and the heater to not run.

Anyone else with a simular problem would be advised to do the fuel quantity test as shown in the manual as this could be a cause of problems that most people wouldnt think of. (i didnt!)
