Hi All,

Ive just started a new job on the west coast of scotland and the boss kindly allowed me to stay on the boat, But now the heating has died and im freezing my balls off!

Its an Eberspacher (not sure of the model) but i fired it up and started producing heat, 5 minutes later the fan stopped and i got an awerful lot of white smoke coming out of the air intake pipe!

Any ideas what i can do?

Pete

Hi, locate the control box as it will have in built diagnostics.
Search online for a manual for which ever model you have and it will explain how to check it out. (might involve connecting a bulb to the diagnostic wires and counting the flashes to give you a fault code)
From experience battery voltage is critical maybe just that! Good luck.

If it was producing real heat it was working! then it stopped. fuel, battery power, overheat/flame sensor. white smoke from air inlet is new to me. smoke from exhaust is common as the heater having failed will purge the combustion chamber.
yes, find a manual, see if there is a fault code, check fuel and battery. Get another sleeping bag.

Run it on a container of paraffin for a fill or 2 and check the filter. Paraffin runs easier through the filter and can clean out the combustion chamber too. It's my winter fuel of choice as the marine diesel clogs up the filter when cold

The symptoms sound like either a power interrupton, blown fuse, burned out fan motor or possibly something physical getting into the fan and stopping it, other faults would induce a normal run down with cooling cycle. A dead stop always produces smoke from the air intake due to the design so that is not abnormal.

Have had similar problems. Eberspacher is finicky Here is some ideas.

Before shutting down, run full heat to clear the combustion chamber.
Use paraffin on separate tank, it burns hotter to clear the combustion chamber.
My Eberspacher was diagnosed by specialist service mechanic that the flame sensor was inoperative; his diagnostic kit looked like he could use on a nuclear reactor. Cost was £150 but could have been much higher.
I perform all of the above but...
At the dock, I run a small 2000w electric heater £12.98 from B&Q. Much easier and I use the Eberspacher when sailing running paraffin.
