I hate these ruddy things! We have a D5 which starts up fine but once it's up to what appears to be temperature, it goes to tickover with green light flashing but doesn't cut back in when the temperature drops.

The controller is the simple one with just an on/off rocker switch, red light and green light, rotary knob for temperature setting.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers...............Phil

Had same problem caused by fuel filter blockage. Resolved by changing the small thimble type fuel filter located at the pump inlet. Simple to change and costs around £4. Filter sits in a recess, you may need a pointed tool to lift and remove.

That sounds like the problem. Don't want to start an argument, but if you give them volts, clean fuel, and regular use, they do the business. Have had them for about 35 years in trucks and for the last nine on the boat.

Have you checked the air inlet side of both the balanced flue inlet pipe and the main air inlet as once the unit has warmed it has a sensor that can shut down if the unit is short of inlet air, I once attended a boat where the owner had placed something right up to the inlet of the unit causing it to shut down once warmed up.

Thanks Paul, so far as I know nothing's changed on the inlets but I'll double check for restrictions at the weekend.

But wouldn't that prevent it from starting up in the first place? Pump is in line after Racor filter rather than straight off the tank.

My symptoms were identical to yours, I assume fuel requirement at start up is less than running. If increasing voltage you may be increasing pressure and temporarily overcoming the blockage. What was bizarre was my unit sometimes failed to start from cold as you suggest, but would start up if engine circuits were powered up, this possibly increasing voltage and pressure as you mention.
There is a good manufacture web site covering problems with possible solutions, one of which is to check air flow blockages as Paul suggested.
In my case the filter resolved the issue. However I do plan to get an engineer in to give the system a full service shortly as system failure only occurs when your on the boat and its bloody cold. They don't fail in the summer!
