I have tried twice to post this on PBO and nothing appears under the heading so this is a third try on a different forum.

I have just run my secondhand DILC on the bench and it works well. I was surprised at the high heat output. I have two questions.
1. Coming from a vehicle the input fuel line is equipped with a 2mm black plastic pipe. My fuel tank has two additional rubber plugs in the top(besides the engine offtake) that have 8 mm plastic elbows inserted and an 80 mm x 10 mm clear plastic pipe joining them. I assume this is to connect the heater standpipe. What bits do I need to connect the fuel pump. Should I buy some 8 mm copper pipe and use that as a standpipe through one of the 8 mm holes in a rubber plug. If so what is the preferred method of blocking the other plug. I hope someone out there has been through this and found a good solution.
2. I have a rotary knob to turn the heater on which has a LED in the middle and 4 positions. I plan to use this as the on/off control. But how would one mount it. The body is 40 mm in diameter. The only way I can see, as there is no additional shaft length, is to make a 40 mm hole in a ply bulkhead and push fit it. What do others do. I hope someone can help.

like a bad smell, bent penny, bouncing cheque ... the evil piece of equipment euphemistically described as a boat heater has brought you to this place where such devices are well known. I know of one who acquired his ebespacher off a McCroan's fish lorry some years ago and suffered terminal failure or more likely the auld goat wasn't paying attention when he nicked it and forgot which terminal was +ve and the heater blew back a cloud of noxious black fumes into the cabin from which he appears from time to time clutching a blackened, acrid and tarred, article.

After these sincere warnings, i have no doubt of your success. Would you be able to furnish a sound recording of your ebespacher in operation such that I could send it to him? He is inconsolable when he hears other boats with working ebespachers and this might give temporary relief.

Can't help with the fuel bits, but if your controller is the same as mine then...
Pull the plastic knob off, remove the nut, remove the dial, you should then have a threaded plastic centre section with flats on two sides.
Cut yourself a hole ie kind of oval with flat sides, push the threaded plastic through from the back and re-assemble. Unfortunately you can only fit it through a fairly thin plate so you may have to mount it on a piece of ally, cut a bigger hole in the bulkhead and mount the ally over the big hole....
God that was hard work...

The only thing I do know about the fuel pipe is that the clear bit is calibrated, you must not (apparently) remove or change this pipe if you want the heater to run correctly. But that said, any extension to length should be done before the pump.

Hope that helps......

As the other chap says, the nob comes off the shaft. Waggle it gently whilst pulling. In fact the actual shaft come off with the nob!
Not really sure what the problem is on the fuel tank. Do the plastic pipes go down into the fuel. If so I would try to conect a feed from one of those into the fuel pump. I got my fuel line bits from an eberspacher dealer and the parts were not that expensive. I actually bought a stand-pipe that I fitted to the top of my tank. I would stick a nail, or something similar, up the spare plastic pipe and put a jubilee-type clip round it. Again a dealer will have very small jubilee clips. If this does not answer your question ask more questions. Have you got an installation manuel? Paul

Personally speaking, I think that if you look at your primary fuel filter, you may well find 2 inlets and 2 outlets such as I have on mine. That being the case, I would take the heater fuel from the second outlet as the cleaner the fuel the better, and coming direct from the tank, you may well pick up some crap.IMHO

Eberspacher have a parts kit specifically for marinising the D1LC....copper pipes, fittings the lot.
Contact an Eberspacher agent and they should be able to get it for you.

All I did was drilled a 4mm hole through the cap of a 5 litre fuel can and poked the fuel pipe through. When it looks like it is getting low it's a simple task to unscrew the cap of the empty can and put it on the spare full can.

Kim

P.S. If you decide on fitting it direct to your tank you must ensure the inside diameter of pipe is 2mm or your pump will be overworked trying to suck up large amounts of fuel it doesn't need.

Thanks to you all for your hints and tips.
It never ceases to amaze me how many possible solutions there are to each problem. I think I now know what I will do.
