My Eberspacher Hydronic D4W was working last week. Then starting last week though it would fire up ok with smoke coming from exhaust, after about 5 minutes it would shut itself off. My fuel is at least 6 months old. As I am on the canal in London and city lock is closed I am unable to get fresh fuel. Therefore I tried running paraffin thru. I have long heard that Ebers love paraffin which decokes the chamber. So I took the fuel line from the end closest to the fuel tank - about 8 feet away from the Eberspacher. I stuck the fuel line into a jug of liquid paraffin and turned on the Eberspacher. Once again it fired up and shut off after 5 minutes. I did notice this time some white smoke leaking from the part where the exhaust pipe meets eberspacher. The white smoke was coming from the large diameter metal casing which surrounds the heavy fabric insulation, which in turn surrounds the exhaust pipe. After it shut itself off I tried turning it on again. This time it merely made a short wiring sound for about 1/2 a second and then did nothing else. I replaced the fuel line back to the diesel. Then I tried running the paraffin again, this time by detaching the fuel line at the end closest to the eberspacher. But still it only wirred for 1/2 a second. I now suspect the Eberspacher is locked. According to the workshop manual the Eberspacher will fail after 10 failed attempts in a row. That sounds about right. I have tried all week a couple of times each day. I thought the problem was the fuel as it is so old, but now I wonder if it is the exhaust? How can I unlock it?

Hi geegrrl,
I know very little about these heaters. However,if there is a dip in the exhaust pipe, water can lodge there, impeding the flow of gases. In the "fix" I heard of, a tampon firmly attached to a straightened wire coat hanger was used.Inserted via the transom outlet in this case.As regards lockout strategies and recovery from same, wait for othes more knowledgable to advise.OP's may require model no. and serial number to best advise.Lots of help on here if you are prepared to get a bit dirty!

I am led to believe that you will have to get an Eberspacher engineer to unlock the unit. Sounds like you may need one anyway to carry out a service.
