I have an Eberspacher Airtronic D4 heater installed on my boat and was recommended by a dealer (at the SIBS) to replace both fuel filters as the heater is now seven years old and as far as I know never been serviced.

I bought both the filters needed and this weekend attempted to fit them. No problem for the inline filter by the fuel pump. Once I got the old filter out a job of a few seconds. However, the filter by the glowpin is a different matter but mainly because of where my heater is located.

Imagine a heater fitted under the aft step of a yacht with a transom bathing panel, about an inch and a half clearance above the heater. Not only that but the heater faces aft also. Only access is via the removable panel in the aft bulkhead of the aft cabin. Heater is fitted to an aluminium bracket that faces upwards covering most of the forward facing side of the heater.

Finally my question. Is it an easy job to remove an Eberspacher heater, replace the filter at the glowpin then refit. Do I need to use any sealants etc to ensure the exhaust does not leak into the boat and if so what is recommended. Anyone had similar problems or is there a simpler way?

As the Op says why change it, it isnt a filter either, its a wick, the diesel dribbles along it and it works much like the mantle in a tilley lamp, if its working ok leave it till it aint, it will start to smoke on running if it starts going bad, to remove the machine is pretty straight forward, 4 6mm nuts and the hoses and trunking, the exhaust will be tight and if you are really worried a smidgeon of exhaust sealant around the exhaust stub will ensure a good seal.

I suppose what we all would like is a service manual for these heaters. Does anybody know an on line site which will give details for servicing these things and or what needs to be done.
