Hi Guys

When I acquired my boat in October of last year one of the items not functioning was the old Eberspacher heating D3L, with the later ECU module (albeit still 1993). Anyway, I have stripped the unit, serviced and cleaned the main unit inc a new glow plug, gaskets and wick in the hope that the old (poor condition) was the issue preventing the start up. Needless to say when putting it all back together there are some gremlins. When I start it up the fan (sometimes kicks in), fuel pump ticks but no ignition. Other times just the lights on the thermostat light up. This has led me to believe the ECU is probably the likely defective item. I was wondering if anyone had an old (working!) ECU I could borrow to test or purchase - a new one is not really worth it on such an old unit. ECU part number is 25.1688.50.00.05

Also while I am at it does anyone know where I can get a replacement relay from? The part number, written on the current one is: Siemens 23134-J1-X113 12v (also has R6C3 written on it in white print)

Any thoughts/ideas very welcome.

Thanks in advance!

When I bought my (sailing - sorry to be trespassing) boat the D3L would not run. When started the lights came on on the controller, the fan started and the pump clicked but it then cut out after 10 - 20 seconds. Never fired up and produced hot air. After much investigation such as you have done I traced the cabling from control unit to batteries to find the makers supplied power cable neatly coiled, in an inaccessible place, then joined to some of the thinnest wire ever made to make a connection to the batteries 1m away. Removed this thin wire and connected the main cable directly and I have had no problem in the 4 years since.
Your problem sounds more complicated with variable symptoms but it may be worthwhile checking the power supply as they are very sensitive to voltage drop

My smaller Ebersprächer from early 90's died this summer, probably after night of thunder and lightning. A new Eb would cost about £900 here in Sweden. Our Eb service boys in Stockholm said that the ECU most likely was the cause. So a new ECU was ordered. It cost me about £350. Much cheaper than a new Eb, and very easy to change.
It will probably work 10 more years, if it can stay away from lightning.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I've decided to opt for a new Webasto unit as I was deliberating between the ECU cost and putting in some extra and having a new unit with warrenty, without the guarantee of the ECU fixing the problem I went for the new unit. Hopefully this way I will have many troublefree toasty days on the boat!

Good decision, hope it was a proper marine unit from a registered UK dealer, you will get a three year on board warranty then, otherwise its a return to seller job.
