Eberspacher fuel pump noise

Could be that the larger volume of the new filter reduces the water (oil) hammer effect in the line. I have that same filter as a primary on my engine fuel line.

I presume the filter is upstream of the pump? I would think the reduction in restriciton means a lesser pressure differential across the pump, but I think water hammer is caused by a restriction downstream, like mains water hammering when you turn off a tap. There is still a crude filter in the pump inlet, though which hopefully never has to do any filtering!

The Crosland mini filter is a good choice for heater supply and my default when not supplied in the kits, but why pay ASAP prices for one? The pump will not be doing any more or less work than it was before but different mounting rubbers may well help, it is interesting that some pumps are intrinsically quieter than others, the red Webasto ones are much quieter than the silver ones for instance. The noise is simply the slamming of the piston, though one full of fuel is a bit quieter due to the damping effect so it is as you say, a mystery, unless you were pulling in a little air with the previous install.
