I have a D5L which was bought off ebay as a runnner but surprise, surprise it's dead as a dodo! Is there anyone out there who could repair this rather than go via the main agents with their associated sky high rates!!
Appreciate any help.

what does it do? what you have got to remember is that you need BIG fat cables to connect to the battery, a fully charged battery and you must flash the tick tick pump to make sure the fuel lines are full before you attempt to start it.
tell us what you have done and take it from there

agree - more info needed. Also the D5LC has a lock out feature on the ECU. after a certain number of false starts the heater fails to run, without a re-boot.

I had an Ebby D5 that was faulty and took it to a commercial truck repair centre and they got it fixed at a reasonable price. I think it's the same kind of unit that's used in lorry's. Might be worth a try instead of using a marine repair facility.

[/ QUOTE ]Someone on this board, quite recently, said that's not true of the D5 -- are you certain?

i'm not 100% convinced it is true..... while i'm not certain, my D5LC recently failed to start a fair few times (needed a decoke), and I never suffered a lock out.... I don't have a timer unit (well I do, but its not been fitted!), so can't do a reset directly, so was nervous of this potential problem, but after about 10 attempts to get it to fire, I decided it didn't have a lock out... so I think Lemain is right.

Stu,
I recently had my D4 serviced for the first time after running for 1,400 hours. Got Krueger in New Milton to do it for what I thought was a most reasonable cost.

I too used Krueger at New Milton for my Eber D3L which probably hadn't been serviced for a few years. £180 inc VAT which included a de-coke, new glow plug, filter, diagnostics etc. Runs fine now. Friendly service, prompt work and good advice from them. No connection.

Thanks for that, but, dont forget am a time served man from many years ago, I like going on the spanners now and again. Stripping an Eber is a piece of p*** for me so I dont like paying for some one else to do it, very therapeutic!!

Stu,
I have pulled it apart to replace the serviceable items which has gone fine. I just want to check that the fan works before I had it fitted to the boat. So, I connnected the big red wire to positive and the brown to the negative on a fully charged battery and not a sign of life despite switching it on and off a few times...Am I being stupid or missing something obvious?

OK, presume you mean the main fead to the eber, rather than the feed to the fan? You can put power direct to the fan to check it works. However read the manual I have sign posted in one of my other posts here, one of the points it makes is that the pump must be connected for it to go thru its pre start checks. Set it all up with everything connected, prime the tick tick pump by flashing the terminals to a battery to make it tick till the fuel goes thru. If you have connected everything correctly you should get at least a kick of the fan as it goes thru the pre start checks. You can bypass all the controls by joining the yellow wire to the purple to bypass the controller, (im assuming they are the same as the D1, D2 etc)
