I am in the market for a heater , some excellent deals on recon and new ebers on ebay.
Seem to good to be true, are they? Has anyone bought one, is there a catch? are they difficult to fit? reliable?
Cheers

I purchased a D2 on eBay. Didn't produce huge amount of heat, but disassembly and use of an airline soon sorted it out.

They are basically very simple units. The downside which agrevates eveyrone is that they lock out after 10 or so unsuccesful starting attempts. I understand that newer models / other manufacturers aren't so irritating.

To ensure operation of eberspacher:

1. Healthy Battery
2. Good sized wire to unit (voltage drop at 20A startup can be a problem)
3. Pump mounted at 45degrees, and below level of fuel in tank (primes a lot quicker)
4. Really airtight fuel line connections

Recommendations:

Insulate the air delivery pipe - why pay to heat the lockers!

Second hand eberspachers:

Clean fuel filter (in inlet of pump)
Check glowplug
Diassemble and clean out with airline. Reassemble with new gaskets etc.

Interestingly, I had to replace the supplied clear fuel pipe with copper pipe to comply with BW rules. Since doing this I'm convinced I'm getting a higher heat output - the copper pipe bore is somewhat larger than the standard plastic pipe.

The D2 Eberspachers do not have the lockout after failing to start.

It is only the D1LC model that has this 'feature', so you wont have that worry with a D2.

There are simple to take apart to clean, so servicing a used one before installing it may prove worthwhile.

Yes - The ECU has a lock out function on it. I have a D5 and if the eber fails to start i think it is 3 consec times for some reason (maybe fuel related, sensors or some other problem). The ECU shuts down and prevents you starting the eber up until the problem is solved.

Unless you have the diognostic tool to correct the problem, you will have to sent the unit back to eber to be reset and yes they will charge you a small fortune for this.

The newer units have faults displayed on the main start up switch. older models you have to blink code.

Eberapcher UK had this to say when a forum member wrote to them:

Only the Eberspacher D1LC and some early D1LC " Compact" heaters produced between 1990-1998 have the "lock out" in the event of 5 unsuccessful physical start attempts (each attempt means two automatic starts to give the 10 starts before "lock out"). Should the heater start during these attempts then it cancels all previous non start fault codes.

In these cases, i dont think your heater is actually locked out, it just has a problem which is causing it to refuse to start.

The favorite for my one is a failed glowplug. If this happens, the unit can be switched on, but nothing happens, the fan doesnt turn or anything. It is not locked out, it is simply not switching on as it knows the glowplug has failed.

So basically, if you dont have a D1LC, then do not allow a dealer to charge you for an unlock, as they are simply making a fast buck or three.
