Please could someone advise whether service parts/kits are still available for the D1LC and where can I get them in UK. Additionally what will I need to replace every serviceable item.

Thanks

Mike

The minimum you will need will be new gaskets. I only 'service' heaters if they are not starting properly or smoking or not giving out much heat or have fan whine. I don't really consider many parts as essential 'wearing out' service items. Is yours showing signs of needing a 'service'?

Thanks for replies.

Have now found service kit SKU 29.2199.01.3586

Add the plastic casing rivets and the price is around £90 and as you point out a new heater from china is about the same price.

My boat is 27 years old (I have owned it for 4 years) and the eberspacher is probably the same age. 2 years ago it would not work so with considerable difficulty I removed it from the boat. I soon discovered although the fuse was OK the fuse holder had collapsed. I could have just fitted a new fuse holder and have no doubt it would have worked OK. However as I have no idea how long it is since it was serviced (if ever) I decided to send it away for service. It was returned with a bill for £30 saying there was nothing wrong with it and a very minor part (gauze or something) had been replaced.

Here we are 2 years later and we have a different problem.

I switched it on a few days ago and noticed it was just blowing cold. After a while I did it again - just blowing cold. Tried a third time and it fired up but caused a hell of a stink in the cabin. I removed it ready to go away for service.

I phoned the man who serviced it previously (for £30) and he was clearly of the opinion there would be nothing wrong with the unit and suggested I might have spilt some diesel which was burning off somewhere, I have recently serviced the engine. Took the unit back to the boat and checked for spilt diesel but found none. While I was there along with a helper we temporarily re installed the unit and switched it on. It blew cold for about 10 minutes and I could clearly hear the pump ticking loudly. I decided to switch it off and let it go through its shut down routing before removing it once again. As soon as I shut it down it fired up and started roaring with lots of white smoke which frightened my wife.

I spoke to another boat owner who services his own and others who assured me there is nothing to them and I should learn to do my own servicing, I then posted here for advice.

So do I spend £90 servicing a 27 year old Eber or spend £90 on a new heater?

Mike

As you indicate, a pretty old model ! I wouldn't spend a lot of dosh on it but well worth getting it working.
I immediately suspect the electrics, the older heaters need much more power on start up so everything has to be spot on, check all connections and consider a heavy duty 'jury rig' if you have doubts.
The white smoke on shut down is common,( in some ways a good sign) the pump has pushed fuel into the heater ( flooded it!) and when it thins after switch off it can still ignite.
There may be no need for servicing , it sounds like the main elements are in place.
If it gets too much (work or dosh) just buy Chinese or get a used Eber D2
Good luck

Thanks.

The unit is in the shed so will ensure all the electrical connections are clean before re installation.

The main attraction of getting this unit up and running is it has already been installed, I guess starting with a new unit will cause plenty of extra work.

I had a productive hour this morning in my shed. Popped the rivets out without damaging them, knocked the pins through with a 2mm drill bit. Removed all the casing. Removed the glow plug, loom and the circuit board. 4 screws separated the fan from the burner then 2 screws removed another plate to reveal a gasket in 3 pieces, one of the pieces had dropped out. This is as far as I have got. None of the 6 screws were particularly tight.

The glow plug looks OK to me but shining a torch into the hole where the glow plug came out of revealed some obvious damage. Looks like there should be a mesh thimble but it looks as though there is not much of it left, just a few straggly wires. Will have a better look at it when I work out how to remove it.

At the moment it looks as if I will need to replace the thimble thingy and the broken gasket. The other gasket is perfectly OK.

Can I check the glow plug?

Mike
