its been diffcult to light recently taking about 6 goes, then tonight its cut out for no apparent reason. the pump is ticking quite a bit, but there is fuel in tank.

I have had the igniter out, but thats clean, I am contemplating stripping it out, does the cumbustion chamber get sooted up? is that why it would stop?
what are the servicable items?
 
Check the fuel filter in the pump housing. It's on the inlet side, and looks like a small tube.

Yes, they do get clogged up. Fairly simple to disassemble and clean out with an air line. When was it last de-coked?
 
Also check your power supply - in my experience its the main problem. Check for loose connections & the fuse - mine cracked & had great difficulty in starting till it finally broke on a cold night at anchor....
 
Sorry to be adding a depressing note, but mine suffered similar symptoms last autumn. The fan ran and all seemed to be in order except tht it wouldn't kick into life. Fuel ok, power supply ok, all contacts clean, it turned out to be a failure of the "brain", which is a <£200.00 job.
 
I've successfully taken one apart and cleaned it in the past. It does get sooted, I also changed the filter in the burner and cleaned the burner lines through, gave it a good scrub around, changed a gasket or two and put it all back together. It's fairly solid engineering with little finess (so not too many fiddly bits to go awry). You can get good manuals on the web also (I'm afraid I've not now got the links). The only downside is the price of parts which are silly.

The point about battery power is good - you can check this by trying to light the heater with the engine running (it takes horrendous amps for the first minute or so to burn off old fuel - this is deliberate).
 
How full are your fuel tanks? This has been discussed recently as I had a similar problem with my Mikuni heater. With many thanks to all forumites that contributed, my problem was due to low fuel level and thus the heater pump was not man enough to pump the fuel up to the heater.

There is a gauze filter screen that fits inside the hole for the glowplug so that the glowplug is inside it when fitted. This cokes up on the outside with time, so the flame failure can't see the glow plug working and fuel flow to the plug restricted, hence shuts down.

With coke on the outside the screen usually only comes out by forcible destructive
removal, replace screen, clean plug, should be ok then, if that's the problem. Part number from Espar web site.
