The time has come to replace the starter motor on my 1975 Volvo MD 11c. The original Volvo item is mega bucks but someone trading as Jerrdavis on eBay is advertising brand new units at £122 with free delivery. Seems like a good deal. Maybe too good.
Anyone got experience of replica starters such as this? I'm guessing they are made in China or similar low production cost country.

I may be wrong, but, AFAIK, Volvo don't make the electrical ancillaries. They are made by Bosch, Lucas, et al, and just painted Volvo Green. In fact they don't actually make the engines either, my D1-20 cheerfully accepts Perkins spare parts. If you know who is the original manufacturer of your engine you can easily find out what they OEM ancillaries they use, but I'm sure there will be someone along here before long with some accurate info.

the MD11c is (was) a Volvo made engine, not used in any other application than marine. The starter motor will be made by one of the specialists, but is probably Volvo unique, and obsolete like the rest of the engine. However, a specialist auto electrician should be able to overhaul it.

I think it was a Bosch unit. The cheapo ones can be OK, I've used a cheapo copy on my garden tractor and it's still working well about 5 years later. With a VP starter approaching a thousand quid, I'd be tempted to fit a cheapo copy.

Seems a fair price TBH.
Ebay buyers are well protected.
I suspect the volvo motor was never unique, unless you are expecting production runs of 100,000 you tend to design in existing ancillaries.
So it probably fits something else, or he's maybe sorted a different pinion or something.
It's all very well to rewind a motor, but every other part is still old and worn and/or corroded.
When I was young and skint, I spent many hours repairing a Moto Guzzi starter because a new one was £300 then.
Now they are about £200 and that's a lot less pints of beer.
Why not talk to the guy?

Try alternator and starter motor co no connection likely the same price nice co to deal with

My first thoughts would be to get the existing good quality one overhauled by an auto-electrician as Tranona suggests although you dont say what is wrong with it!

I fitted an Ebay starter last June when my VP2020 starter failed. It cost around £160 as against the £600+ that the local agent wanted.
It has worked perfectly since, and the original was repaired for £50.
We were going for our 2 week cruise the following week, when the starter failed so there was abit of pressure! I now have a spare if I ever need it !!

There are some really horrid Perkins starters on eBay, which are good for about fifty starts before they pack up spectacularly. They, and their consequences, and my surveyor's lack of knowledge of them, and the imbecilic work of the idiot engineers recommended by my surveyor, cost me knocking on for three grand last year, and two weeks lost holiday. The surveyor, by the way, was well recommended by many, and got everything else right.

There's another seller on eBay, alternatorman_uk who's got one for 170 apparently a Lucas unit, just put his prices up, been thinking of getting one for a while as same one for both my engines, an MD6B & an MD11C. Might get one of the 120 quid units as a spare at that price...
Alfred could you post a link to the seller or the motor please, just searched for Jerrdavis & permutations but nothing found...
