Having been exiled for a while I am keen to discover where the current "hot tables" are in terms of decent places to eat on the East Coast.

I used to be a fan of the Ramsholt Arms, but was often disapointed by the semi-industrial cuisine at the Butt & Oyster(loved the beer there though).

We have a foodie crew this weekend and are thinking of heading up towards Backwaters/Orwell/Deben for a few days. Assuming I don't catch a 5lb cod on our way up the Wallet where would be a good place to get them fed? Don't mind stretching the legs once ashore to reach somewhere worthwhile.

Both the Ferry Boat Inn & the Victoria at Felixstowe Ferry do a good meal - but you would be advised to book a table - especially at the FBI.

Totally agree about the Butt & Oyster, the Ramsholt Arms was OK last year, but I personally don't like the food or the atmosphere at the Maybush (Waldringfield). Its a bit of a walk but the Ship at Levington used to be good - but we've not been there for a while.

The tides this weekend aren't too good but the Anchor at Woodbridge was also OK last year as was the ?? restaurant next to the station, but unless you lock into the tidemill you've only got a limited window afloat.

The Contented Sole and the Oyster Smack Inn in Burnham both serve excellent food. The latter is about half the price of the former but pretty well on a par food wise.

The Ship Inn serves copious portions of standard pub fare. Avoid Ye Olde White Hart on the quay if you enjoy good food although it is very picturesque and excellently located overlooking the river.

Went to Queen Vic at Felixstowe Ferry a few weeks back as the Ship at Levington was bursting at the seams as usual.

Usually QV food OK, but on this particular occasion food was borderline inedible. Very indifferent response from staff when a complaint was made. Crew said he 'had the worst indigestion he'd ever had in his life'. I gave up eating after a few mouthfuls.

Ship Inn Levington remains good but you can't book and you will have to wait until they find a table. Also involves a reasonable walk from SYH, once there, you are kind of committed to wait as you've run out of time to get anywhere else.

The Lightship at SYH has a new chef and the food is pretty good. On the spot, so no walking involved. Might be an idea for you? Check them out first to make sure they don't have a club event on as this can put pressure on their fairly limited facilities.

the Lightship seems to change chef more often than I change underwear /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Hope they manage to keep him till we return. Been dissapointed quite a few times, so we now nearly always eat @ Fox's on the way home (cheaper too)

Funny that as lots of Foxs people don't eat there /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

We often go to Buttermans at Woolverstone. More expensive than your average yacht club as it's a kind of restaurant really but we've never had a bad meal.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, most look worth a try, we are already big fan of the Kovalam in Brightlingsea, their fish currys are so good!!

Paul.
