EasyJet to fly from Southend in 2012

You should not lie down defeated.

The Eurozone beer/hotel/anything costs are going through the roof, especially with the poor rate of exchange.

Marina Bar Bradwell is still an attractive vista.:D

This is the eastern most London airport isn't it - London Sarfend?

My first flight was from there in about 1972 - British Air Ferries car transporter to Le Touquet

I can beat that Vince. My brother worked for British United Airways and we went to Rotterdam for the day in about 1964 in a Bristol Freighter. Employee fare was 17/6d return :D:D Gawd they were scary planes - when they revved up at the end of the runway they shook and rattled so you thought they'd fall to bits

Sleazyjet are baseing 3 A319 planes there - 70 flights a week to ten destinations include Barcelona, Faro, Ibiza.

No doubt some Olympic shuttles too. Stobarts have built a new train station on the site on the Southend-Liverpool Street line that stops at Stratford.

Presumably this initiative is to cope with the demand from the citizens of Ibiza and the Algarve to see what a real seaside resort looks like.

If numbers of Iberian visitors build we may need to reopen the once famous Thorpe Bay Bull Ring, renowned for the exploits of "El Whelko" the notorious toreador and shellfish dredger who first made his name fighting the Canvey Longhorn bulls all over South Benfleet in the 1920's.

I wouldnt get all committed or anything... they set up a bunch of flights out of EMA a few years ago... and then when they put up the landing charges when the place got busy... Sleezyjet pullled out....

In 4 years Southend will be buzzing... and Stavros will bugger off and find some other outback cheapo airport to rename London...... (Calais-Dunkirk has a great train connection into London nowadays I understand... and the catering is better.)
