Hi,

I'll be spending a famil week on my new boat (a Rinker) at Eastbourne next month before it is moved by road to my home port of Penarth. So whilst I have current experience of the Bristol Channel and previous experience of the Solent area, Sussex will be new to me.

I've searched the YBW forums and picked up that there's not a great deal near Eastbourne apart from Newhaven or Brighton (it appears the latter of which few have a good word about) and that the pot markers in that region are notorious for trailing lines etc.

So if anyone has any other top-tips they'd be kind enough to share; local hazards, procedures, places to visit/anchor, local pubs/restaurants to try in Eastbourne etc then I'd be very grateful.

Hi Phil,

I can tell you that they will be dredging the entrance channel to Sovereign Harbour commencing March 8th, and in preparation for that Trinity House have removed the entrance buoyage. So take care because there is a wreck located adjacent to the entrance channel which is very easy to hit. The entrance channel is also badly silted and in need of dredging so if you're going out prior to the dredging do ask the tower for advice.

Rye is nice for a visit, about 18nm from Eastbourne. You can do it just over the tide arriving HW -2 and departing HW+2. With that kind of window you can go all the way to Strand Quay. If you stay longer be prepared to dry out. Be wary if a breeze is forecast from the West, its a long punch back even with the tide behind you.
 
Thanks that's really useful to know. I'll check that out when I get to Sovereign Harbour and make sure I've got all the details.

On land: Eastbourne itself is not as geriatric as its reputation. Large stores plus a cinema at the Soveriegn Harbour retail complex. Battle is quite good for decent restaurants but can't recall a name. There's the fun fairs and aquarium at Hastings if young crew need entertaining. Aquarium better in Boulogne though and so are restaurants. Brighton isn't hell on earth, by the way - but if you do go, pot markers, as you say, need watching out for.
 
France is certainly a thought and I guess the fuel may be less expensive over there as well! Can't be any worse than this country. . . can it!

Thanks for the reply. Hope to do some exploring by car whilst I'm there as well so that's all worth knowing. I don't have any young'uns myself but my friend and his family maybe coming down to visit from Surrey so the Aquarium may well be player for the little ones. Thanks again.
