Hi, have any of you ever done the East Med Rally (Starting at Kemer Park Marina in Turkey) or know of anyone who has done it? I am trying to get some info on it but can't seem to find anything in the web.

Thanks,

We know people who did it and had a great time.
The word of warning is that you need to be able to do 5 knots in any direction all the time, which is worring us as live aboards we just do not go that fast up wind.
We are still thinking about it, I'll watch your replies.

I'm sure there is a web site for the rally somewhere, have you surfed?

The rally home page is www.emyr.org but currently shows details for 2004.

Email me if you would like the email addresses of 2 crews who have taken part - I'm sure they wouldn't mind you contacting them for information.

Hi thanks for the web site address. It has a lot of great information. I met some people this summer who did it 2 years ago and I couldn't shut them up about how excellent it was so I am planning on doing it next year. Thye didn't mention the 5 knot minimum but they did say that there were a lot of night sails.

Thanks

We have looked into it but decided against it. Whilst the route taken and the ports visited are very interesting, the organisation of the rally goes against everything that we believe makes for safe and enjoyable cruising. The legs are long with many early morning starts. The plan is totally inflexible as there are civic receptions organised all along the route. That means you either drop out or you leave port in adverse conditions in order to keep up. If you have a slow boat you have to get up extra early (maybe 0300 instead of 0500) in order to stand a chance of arriving on time. If you don't you arrive after everyone else and have to raft up outside 50 other yachts and quite possibly find your own way to the reception. We have spoken to many folk who say it is the best thing they have ever done and who are are quite happy to suffer all this for the sake of seeing some exotic ports. We are not.

P.S. The Med-Red Rally is a different Rally organised by a different group. Details here.
