Can anyone come up with a good suggestion of a place I can take my Princess 440 based at Great Yarmouth out for a day trip... I want somewhere where we can visit for lunch/tea. I was looking at Cromer but dont know if they have a harbour I can tie up in ?....

Errm dont think Cromer has any kind of harbour that could accomodate you. Howabout Lowestoft (not far I know) or better still Southwold. Pint of Adnams and fish and chips at the Harbour Inn?!

Dont know the area well. But surely there is a pilot book of the area, which of course you should have on board. That will give details of any anchorages and suitable places to visit.

Southwold sounds Ideal... my own fault for not bringing my reeds almanac home with me... whats the harbour like, is it like the town quay at Yarmouth? which is ok but not the nicest of places to moor up for a few hours.

Harbour is much more picturesque than Gt Yarmouth. Mooring by the pub alongside pilings. However be aware that Southwold has a very fast tidal flow, upto 6kts on the ebb. Getting in and out not so much the problem as manoeuvering in confined space with the tide running. Entrance to Harbour is narrow but straightforwardish. After entering the harbour keep close to the northern side as you pass the lifeboat station. Don't go if there is a strong onshore wind, 'specially if the ebb is running hard as the entrance can get very nasty. Not sure about depths as I used to go in 25ft RIB not 44ft Mobo! Probably worth timing arrival for a couple of hours short of HT. Definately give the Harbourmaster (or actually harbour mistress in this case) a bell beforehand for local advice and mebbe to reserve mooring spot. (It gets crowded at times.) Most likely you will have to raft, or I suspect be against the quay with others rafted to you given your size.

i live on the Orwell and you will find it a lovely river to sail down with many marina`s to visit.
ie,shotley, levington, wolverston,pin mill.
or go a little further under the orwell bridge to ipswich
with many places to eat and drink.(through the lock) two marina`s in there.
also the trip up the river is beautiful.
try it. you`ll love it.

We must start a 440 owners club for ditch crawlers have you not been out of the broads yet??

Southwold is dead easy at top of tide, or 1hr either side, stay 1/2 mile off when you can see right down the wall follow that line in, keep close to North wall(RHS)
when you get to end you can move out (or run over crabbers) go right down and moorings on right, any further and you may bump into bridge?

Call up "Midge" young lady who is the HM she'll help you in if unsure.

The tide rushes through so use the boards hanging on the jetty and leave plenty of slack on for and aft lines and have good long springs.

Fish and chips in pub are a rip off but beer is great again rip off prices compared to Southwold town which is only 25min stroll away.

I will be home on 25th boat based at Lowestoft now. White Sapphire

IC is also at Low.

Not very happy with the term "Ditch Crawler !"... Ive done loads of coastal stuff in my old boat, just not for the last 3 years as its been sitting at Brundall awaiting new engine and never in anything so big.

You are right though, we ought to start a 440 club. We are now the 5th 440 on the broads that we know of.... and learning fast.

We may go to Ipswich this weekend if the weather is good, Louise is new to everything aquatic and as this is the first boat without outdrives for me our mooring skills need to be worked on a little, and Louise needs to be confident to handle the boat on her own if I jump off, bowthruster is now fixed although iv'e not had to use it and we've not hit anything so far !.

Im impressed with the amount of knowlede that my fellow 440 owners have, mechanicaly minded I am not, but the tips have all been useful in the forum. My Navigation skills are fine, but the lack of local area knowledge has limited the amount of places that I can take a trip to without putting Lousie of boating.

Thanks again for your input.

If you don't want to put her off and still have the art of putting your boat infront of a pub, make sure she's omewhere near my wife, shopping and finding out of the ordinary exspensive things is a hobby, the boat is a means to get there.
The second smaller fridge is ideal for cheeses etc and large fridge plenty of room for tonic, stella's etc. The large hold by the galley for 250,000 ciggies or 12 crates of champers or naughty children.

What a wonderful Boat.

By the way what was up with your engine.

Thanks for the tip....

Princess Engines were fine, just the mechanic needed to finish off a few jobs, air filters , generator controler unit etc... then this weekend..... having read everyones tips re control cables..... PORT engine got stuck in reverse when changing from helm possitions.

Went around in circles for 20 minutes figuring out what to do, before letting her drift into the reeds... then rescued by Ocean 37 to a mooring near to the reedcutters pub and spent the weekend with a hangover.

having the contolers swapped for New Morse ones today so all should be fine.
