After several years slouching around the Solent/Channel I have decided to move my boat (Centaur) to the Ipswich area.
I have an well thumbed Shell Channel pilot which I have found extremely useful and would be grateful if someone could let me know which similar publication would suit my purposes for sailing in the Orwell/suffolk area combining useful navigational advice with useful advice re nearest real beer pub etc. Thanks

East Coast Pilot by Colin Jarman amongst others (3 authors - can't remember the other two!)

New edition in Jan 08, so very current.... great for nav... OK for shore facilities

For more detail on pubs ashore, then the East Coast Cruising Companion by Janet Harper...

Suggest you buy both... they are two very good books.

PS... welcome to the Orwell... there are loads of us on this forum.... including Sailorman above!

Take a peek at the East Coast forum further down the page... lots of good info and advice in there....

East Coast Pilot Less information on local places of interest but clearer information and more detail on approaches and passage planning. I have this and East Coast Rivers. The Rivers book is a better read but the Pilot book is the one in the cockpit.

Should be done under the Trades Description Act. Lowestoft to Ramsgate is but a tiny (and muddy) portion of the UK east coast.

When I was sailing on the East Coast I had (and still have) "The East Coast" A Pilot guide from the Wash to Ramsgate by Derek Bowskill 4th Edition, ISBN 0 85288 369 2.
Excellent book, has all info you need to know together with charts and pictures.

Maybe they planned a Whole East Coast of Britain pilot but ran out of money?

I agree with m'learned friend Mr Awol. The RNYC sailing directions covers the Humber to Rattray Head including the joys of the Farnes, Holy Island, and the delightful Firth of Forth and is a model of what a good pilot book should be. Not much use if you are somewhere in Suffolk though I admit. Mind you all that coast from the Wash southward will be a shallow sea in a few decades so a new book will be called for anyway.

I had a copy of 'The East Coast' when I started sailing round here. Every time I looked up details of somewhere I wanted to go, it seemed he said something like "I didn't manage to get in there and went somewhere else"!!
Here's another vote for 'East Coast Pilot'. Just bought the new one, bang up to date and complemented by website where you find updates/changes. Yes it's lighter on pubs and restaurants than 'East Coast Rivers' (itself at least 4 years out of date I think?) but hey these places all change anyway, new landlords, new chefs, places going bust, others starting up. We like exploring when we get ashore and usually find somewhere we're happy with.

Bowskill's book is a bit rambling in places and he's a mobo-er so it doesn't always have the info a raggie needs.

East Coast Rivers - excellent book

East Coast Pilot - the most up to date and has a website with updates etc on it.

I love pilot books so have all three

Simon
