I have been offered, what is supposed to be an East Coast One Design. About 27 to 29 feet long, carvel planked hull, drop keel, and this one is Gaff rigged, with a small petrol engine. Does anybody have any pictures or advice regarding these craft please ? Where might there be pictures and drawing of the E.C.O.D yachts ? Thanks in advance, BWM.

Number nine belongs to a member of Wivenhoe sailing club, Have not got a photo at present. Hull is classic carvel built with long counter, fin keeled no engine. Superficially at least similar in appearance to a dragon.

A tenth was built in 1937 - and all ten are still racing today, a 100 per cent record. They were 30 foot LOA, with a draft of 4 feet and gaff-rigged with 344 square feet of sail. The rig was updated to Bermudan sailplan in 1926:


There were many one designs built and I suspect you will need to further research as to which particular design it may be.

The subject of east coast / thames estuary / east anglian / essex one designs (small letters intended!) is immensely complicated!

I think that there may have been an earlier "Essex OD", before the very sucessful G.U. Laws design, and there is an "Essex Restricted Class" which is much later and bigger and is a lengthened, clinker, East Anglian.
