Folks

I'm driving to Woolverston in the morning with my Cape Cutter 19 for a week of pottering and recuperation. I've no real plans, but just hope to check out the Stour and Orwell, and wherever else I can get to without pushing myself. I've watched Dylan's films, and I'm ready to go.

Give me a wave if you see me. White hull, tan sails, gaff cutter. Number 47 on the main. I could even have the forum burgee aloft.

The Stour is a bit deceptive, loads of water but the depths are only in the chanel. Best go up the Orwell and then down to the sea. Pick your spot for overnight, maybe Shotley, definately not the outside on the pontoon at Harwich. Perhaps up and down the Stour Sunday, a lunchtime stop at Harwich and then on the Orwell again until it is time to go. Have a good time!

I'm a bit of a convert to Halfpenny Pier at Harwich. Yep, the outside of the pontoon can be rolly (probably mostly) but getting on the inside was not as awkward as I thought for me in a long keeler. The pier masters are a delight and the food and shops ashore are better than Shotley.
Anchorages in the Stour and Orwell (see E Coast Pilot or advice here), probably an empty buoy off Levington and then there's heading up the Orwell - worth a stop in the centre of Ipswich.
The Deben, as mentioned but also the Walton Backwaters are well worth an explore.
Looks like you could be short of time.

I'm still out and about. Moved from Walton to Brightlingsea for a couple of days. Now in Burnham, but hopefully heading back to Walton tomorrow, and the Stour on Thursday.

I sailed into Harwich this morning alongside the Dutch tall ships fleet, then up to Ipswich. There'll be some partying going on tonight judging by the age of the corporate crew - and the fact that each ship was blasting out Euro Pop for the length of the Orwell.

I left Brightlingsea on Tuesday for Burnham, and sailed back to Walton yesterday. Just a sail back down to SYH tomorrow, pack up and head home. It's a lovely area, and I'll definitely be back - especially since I bought the chart folio.
