Hi all,

Looking for some advice/recommendations. Exploring the option of applying copper coat to the boat (Bavaria 38).

This will be a DIY application and I’m pretty comfortable with the methods etc although any advice is always welcome.

However prior to the application I think the best method of prep would be to have the hull and keel blasted.

Can anyone recommend somebody who can do this for me?

I’m based in Burnham Yacht Harbour but can move the boat etc if necessary. I’m not very knowledgeable on this subject so not even sure if it can be done remotely or whether you would need a specific area etc.

Many Thanks

Suggest the first place to ask is the boatyard - i am sure you will not be the only person who has done the job there. Practice varies, but in our club we have a designated area with a good solid surface that is easily cleaned reserved for blasting and recoating - there is a Jeanneau 389 just finished Coppercoating this week. Preparation is as important as application so you need an operative who knows what he is doing. Critical to get epoxy on the iron keel immediately after blasting. I did the keel on my Bavaria a few years ago after the initial application failed through poor preparation (the keel surface was ground rather than blasted - boat was new). Done in the summer when the weather was like this summer. If weather is good the whole process takes approx 2 weeks from start to launch.

Can't help with a contractor where you are as I am in Poole, but hopefully others will come in with suggestions.

On the East Coast most of the blasting is done by one guy. He is subcontracted by the various boatyards. Can’t remember his name but he is a reliable bod and did a fantastic job with the blasting. We got the best deal with Suffolk Yacht Harbour. Lift out, blasting, laying up, we got them to do the sanding over the winter lay up. So in the spring we did the epoxying and, in our case antifouling ourselves.

I had my coppercoat done professional at Tollesbury. Hull was blasted and dried in a heated shed for 6 days then the fill every tiny hole in the gel coat, applied the CC and left it several more days in the shed. Still as good as new after 10 years. Prep is everything.

Althorne Marine at Bradwell do blasting.

You're right thinking that blasting is the best preparation for both the iton keel and below waterline grp, but best to use a contractor experienced in blasting grp yacht hulls. For environmental reasons blasting should be done in an area designed for that purpose to enable the old a/f to be cleaned up and safely disposed of. Ideally, after blasting, pressure wash the iron keel with fresh water to flush out as much salt as possible, then blast lightly again to take off the gingering (light rusting from washing).

In the UK climate, you need to do the application in a heated and humidity controlled workshop or over a stable dry period in the summer - I'm ot aware of anyone leasing out a climate controlled workshop for DIY work.

Peter.
