Earth race. make them stop please

A round the world " Race" is an obscene waste of fuel and time and money and as such in this more eco aware times should be made illegal, not supported.

My view is the same for the round Britain race.

I totally agree about the bloody adverts by the way.

I agree with that. For the life of me, I cannot understand the principle of encouraging the rest of us to emit less carbons by gallivanting around the world in a big fast boat even if it is mostly driven by biofuel. I'm not a supporter of biofuels anyway because a) it encourages 3rd world farmers to grow fuel for us rather than food for themselves b) the demand has already increased commodity prices and c) we can never grow enough to satisfy the world's needs anyway
Seems like an excuse for a boy's jolly if you ask me

Malaysia and Indonesia are supporting bio-fuel in a BIG way.

By cutting down rainforest and replanting with oil palms. They are even replanting at altitudes that oil palms grow slowly in.

In this case, it really is ALL about getting the timber out. The veneer of environmentalism is a micron thick. All is seriously rotten beneath.

Round the world in a fast powerboat is a worthy "man against the elements" adventure, dressing it up as environmentally sound is a nonsense

In the present "eco aware", "climate", not at all sure I agree with the "worthy adventure" bit, but I am with you 100% about the hypocracy of the "friendly" bit. The whole thing stinks, in more ways than one! Bill.

Maybe the same could be said about all motor boats. We are all as bad!!! 0.5 to 2mpg!!!

Absolutely! Bit rich for people on a motorboat forum to complain that a round the world race is "an obscene waste of fuel and time and money and as such in this more eco aware times should be made illegal".

I wonder what burns more fuel in a year, a round the world race, or all the leisure boats in the UK in a year.

If the argument applies to one, it applies to both.

yes, but we are not dressing it up as something else with our hands out for "sponsorship"

It's just a rather silly pointless project.

The sponsorship could be more effective doing something genuinely worthy, admirable and pratical like installing water purification systems in parts of the 3rd world.

IMO, it is no more wasteful than us using our own mo'bo's for fun. In fact it could be said to be a better use of resources... it has got us talking about it and so raising the awareness of biofuels.

Sometimes you have to use resources to save them long term.

I support their efforts to raise bio awareness worldwide.

Secondly, it looks great fun and I wish I could do it but I haven't got the dosh to buy a ride /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think all these competitions from around the world to even car racing, should start thinking in a different way

they should for example start pushing hybrid concepts, but also alternative energy concepts like solar, wind etc
I am surprised how much the competition challenging world is still sleeping on this one, not only in boats but also in car racing
