Earls Court - where are the motorboats?

I was very disappointed to see the list of motorboat stands at Earls Court in this month's MBM. I can understand the leading lights of the BMF not supporting the show but where are all the French, Italian and Spanish manufacturers, many of whom were complaining that they could'nt get enough space at Excel? It looks to me as if the Earls Court show will turn out to be an exhibition for vendors trying to sell 'lifestyle' tat to apparently rich boat owners rather than a show primarily for exhibiting boats
I will go because it's on my doorstep and because I want to support it as I think the Excel show needs a kicking but I would'nt bother if I lived any distance from London
Anybody else feel the same? Any boat builders or dealers out there who want to tell us why they are'nt exhibiting?
 
My own view on Earl's Court is that it will be more a sailboat and sports boat show with an slight eye on getting people into the market.

I think because of the logistics of getting big power boats in there it won't become a big power boat show. One of the reaons it moved to Excel was the police no longer wanted to remove the street furniture to get large boats in.

I also think most exhibitors at other shows are taking a let's see what happens this year approach before doing yet another show and the Europeans have just had the run of Genoa, Barcelona and Paris remember.....

In fact, it's my Pearl 60 that's at the show - so shoes off and no using the loo!
 
Congrats, you bought it, then? Keep the forum informed how it goes. Loads of pics and details of the bad as well as the good bits please!

For us because er, .............. 'Dusseldorf' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif


Toss up between Excel or Earls Court or Dusseldorf.... £100k doesn't do all three afraid and Dusseldorf has the bigger attendances and more serious buyers not too mention ten times the amount of stands and boats, from 12' to 160' and every shape, size and configuration in between.

Yes, yes, I wasn't wearing a lifejacket but SVII was nearby to save me if I fell in (I trust him totally and the running over the fender on MOB exercise was just a hicup /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Actually a very nice boat and certainly tackles the rough stuff no worries, felt like I was bashing the sea into submission /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I know for sure even with all the offers of free floor space at EC, the overall costs with both SBS, LBS & a handful of smaller shows means year on year expenditure for ‘shows’ is getting serious.

In short no way was EC tempting being as its so close to the LBS, effectively doubling the hotel costs, stand build costs, entertainment costs, living costs, transportation & storage costs etc etc etc….

Not least EC was always a crap place to take in anything much larger than a brief case.

Which part of docklands do you live in then ?

It has to be the most rediculous venue ever. There is no way to get there without going right through London and then queuing up for the bottleneck they call the Blackwall Tunnel. It`s taken me nearly 3 hours to get there in the past from Uxbridge (West London). When you get there you`re met by an army of people who neither know nor care, you`re directed all around the houses in search of parking and end up having to lie your way into a car park on the premise you`re exhibiting / have to attend a medical emergency / are about to give birth or are a member of a small religious sect that views the site as one of religious significance.

Once there you have all the fine dining options of a Slough trading estate on Sunday afternoon - and you say you want to sit down to eat your food - no problem sir sit anywhere you like on the floor, alternatively if you pop down 8 flights of stairs you can sit on the bog & eat.

Compare that to the NEC, easy access, the most helpfull staff imaginable, more space than you can shake a stick at and quicker to get to from the home counties than Excel !

For last couple years, one could have said "Where are the chandleries and sailboats at Excel???" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I already have a boat, but always in the market for gadgets so looking forward to EC.

Let me get this one straight in my mind. You travel hundreds of miles to a supposedly world class venue that cost hundreds of millions of pounds to build.

You walk round an exhibition that demands more than just a casual 40 minutes and you are happy to rely on a sandwich in the car on the way home for food.

Bloody hell mate, you know how to have a good time don`t you !

I would suggest somewhere to sit down for a hot meal, at a table, on which to spread out a couple of the brochures or the exhibition guide would be a given in anyone`s day at the boat show in order to clear your mind a bit and take stock of where you need to be next.

Somewhere to sit down over a cup of coffee and a sticky bun (or possibly an Eccles cake), is nice mid afternoon just prior to going and signing up for your intended purchases.

When I went to excel a few years ago there were neither of those options.

Personally I like to make a complete day of it and have dinner somewhere after the show. If you`re travelling down from the North why not stop over somewhere and explore the sights of docklands, (except there aren`t any & you won`t be able to get any accomodation).

Excel is, sadly, in the wrong place in just the same way Wembley is.
 
Hah, so you're 911virgin? I've visited your emporium on a few occasions although I confess I ended up buying elsewhere.
How do you manage to go thru the Blackwall Tunnel to get to Excel from Uxbridge? From Chesham we go clockwise around the M25 and then down the M11 which is normally just over 1 hr depending on traffic
Agree entirely about the NEC. It seems a no brainer to me
 
I have been to Excel on the last (and busiest) weekend of the show every year its been held there and have never had a problem finding somewhere to sit and eat. The foods not exactly good value but no worse than EC or NEC I expect.

Coming down from York, it makes to difference to me whether its Excel or EC, but I have done Excel as a day trip by car which I would not consider doing for EC.

Overall though you have to wonder why the BMF ignore the NEC which really is our only world class exhibition space. Is it because the City bonus boys won't travel? It could be a fantastic show.

I was talking to the Ferretti/Pershing/Riva dealer at Excel this year and made some comment about him looking forward to relieving some city slickers of some of their bonus money and he said that he saw very few city types flashing cash at Excel. Maybe they buy their boats at the Monaco show?
