I am a much less grumpy old git if I get fresh toast for breakfast, but our horrible finger burning contraption has fallen apart so I need a replacement.
Some while ago either PBO or YM tested kettles and stove top toasters under the above Headline.
I recall that they found one make which held the toast horizontally worked much better than the rest. Anyone have the details?

I think you may have just outed yourself as a closet motorboatalist. That particular gem was in Nov 08 Motor Boats Monthly. The answer was THIS

Don't think any one "make" is any better than others. There are several variations on the basic theme coming from China. My experience has not been good as the wire can burn very quickly, but others have had good experience - think it might depend on the individual burner as much as anything. Just bought one of the more expensive vertical types from Force 4 but not used it yet.

Not confessing anything.I am fully apprecciative of our diesel but remain in need of a long stick up from the boat with cloths to catch the breeze.
Could this be another example of parent company paring costs and serving the same editorial in more than one of their magasines?

It is true that the feature was also used in Sep 08 YM, however it went under the name of 'The great British tea and toast test'.

Still not confessing, but I must admit that the Motor Boat Monthly title is so much better, I must have read it and such a play on words has made it memorable. (little else stays that long these days)

You can make fantastic toast on a cast-iron skillet or frying pan , any thickness you like too!
Did so for many years.

That is the same as suggested earlier - widely available in UK from camping shops and chandlers. Not very good in my experience as the wire mesh burns easily - both the toast and itself - at least on gas, not tried it on a Taylors/Primus burner.
