Someone just twisted my arm and demanded that I apply for a Euro health insurance card before departing for Brittany.

All very simple, quick and free at https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

But you need to know either your NI number or NHS number to complete the online form. 7 day ETA so the site claims.

The URL looks a bit dodgy but a gov.uk web page sent me there. DNSTools reports that ehic.org.uk belongs to a public limited company called Prescription Pricing Authority. So sounds like typical New Labour contracting out nonsense.

If you apply before the end of june, you could be entered into a free draw, 1st prize a duckhouse, and 2nd opportunity to clean out a moat...

Just couldn't resist that one, the ehic health card site is the real deal, really quick turnaround, from registering online, the card was with us within 3 days...

Best to be safe then sorry, might save you getting stumped with a bill if you need to get some treatment abroad..

Enjoy brittany, would love to go, but to far for us on an average 14 day holiday..

Good to hear it works for some. Be careful though & don't rely on it to pay up everything. Get insurance too and make them aware the moment you have any treatment.

One of our kids twisted his knee skiing in France a couple of years ago & needed to see the doc. There was no choice on which one to see, we took him the village health centre. We had to pay and claim when we got back. It took 6 moths for a cheque to arrive back for less than half what the treatment had cost. The reimbursment comes from the country in which the treatment takes place. In France, each treatment has a standard price & that's what you get back.

BUT, some docs in France can effectively charge what they like. They are still health service docs though & not private so I understand.

I believe the EHIC arrangement is that you get the treatment, and bear the costs, that are applicable to a local. Healthcare for pensioners, and dependents of pensioners, is free in Cyprus - the cost of treatment for those below pension age is based upon income and, if you don't fall into the pensioner category, you have to have a very low income to qualify for free treatment - less than about £2000pa I believe.
