I am not very computer literate but I know that many of you are IT experts so I would be very grateful if you would help me to solve a slight problem.

On the Inbox page almost every new e-mail comes up with the paper clip icon alongside whether there is an attachment or not. I say almost because there are one or two inexplicable exceptions. The problem seemed to stem from when I accidentally clicked the attachment in the heading when suddenly the paper clip appeared alongside all my existing e-mails.

Can anyone give me a step-by-step guide how to resolve the situation please.

Thanks in advance, John

Click on the received heading - clicking the headings sorts the emails by that column... useful for finding specific emails ...

Been there done that a few years back. Took me a while to figure what had happened.
It may be necessary to click on the 'received' heading twice to restore the default setting i.e. last mail received at the bottom of the stack.

I've noticed this too only on the latest in my inbox but on all in the wife's inbox since sometime in Feb. I thought it started after loading the new version of AVG Free.

I have explored a little but come to no firm conclusion...odd.

You are probably seeing the attachment icon, because of a 'signature' attached to the email. Some antivirus packages will attach a signature to the bottom of both out going and incoming emails, to the effect that 'this email has been scanned by....'
What antivirus are you running, and can you confirm that the emails have 'scanned by' signature?
Just a guess at the moment

Your theory would explain what I am seeing except that I have some emails that have been scanned and have the "scanned by" signature but do not show the attachment paper clip.

The phenomenon definitely dates from the downloading of AVG 7 though.

For some reason the old AVG 6 did not put a "scanned by" signature on the emails. It did when I first started using it but there was a hiccup with an update once and things were not as they should have been until V7 came along. Probably been living without full protection for sometime.

I think that you may have found the cause, Brendan & Vic. It does seem to date from when I installed the AVG 7 programme and my emails do have the 'scanned by' note.

Probably found the cause, but what's the cure? Thanks for the suggestion about the 'Received' heading but this merely reversed the order of appearance. It did not remove the offending paper clips and I haven't received any messages since so I don't know yet whether it will affect new ones.

[/ QUOTE ]Why are the paperclips a problem? Just leave them alone. They're not hurting anyone.

They are not a problem as such but they are supposed to indicate an attachment but when you go to the e-mail you cant find one. Now that we now what is probably causing them we can ignore them. Attachments will come as a nice surprise when we open the e-mail.

In fact we might as well turn them off (columns in the view menu).

Its still a mystery though why sometimes they don't appear.

Just been back and looked at all the e-mails since mid Feb. Those with paper clips have a solid line across the page between the main body and the signature, those that don't only have a couple of dashes. It contributes nothing to sorting anything out but is all part of the mystery.

OK, if that is the problem, just turn off the signature, and that should be problem solved!
Go to the AVG control centre, click on "E-mail scanner", select the "properties" button, then the "configure" button. Under "E-mail scanning" deselect "certify mail". (or something like that, depending on version)

Delete the reference to the properties button and you are right I think Brendan. Personally I think I shall just ignore the paperclips as I like to see the certification.

Thanks folks for all your help, especially Brendan - your advice did the trick.

It's great to have knowledgeable friends - far more useful than the so-called help lines.

Cheers everyone and have a cracking season's sailing.

John
