Can anyone help me, I have a Nokia 3100 and want to send and receive e-mails from my laptop
I have a cable that connects the 2 together but keep getting errors
I have Win 98SE loaded, I have loaded the driver and Nokia PC Suite, have set up all the parameters but still it wont connect
Can anyone tell me if the phone is capable or not or do I need another phone?
Regards
Terry

Terry,

Your phone is capable of doing this... you don't need a new one....

Your best bet is to ask your service provider for help..... If you are on Vodaphone, they seem to be pretty on the ball with helping to sort this out.... can't speak for others...... you'll need to visit the web site for your service provider to get their number...

failing that.... take a look at http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,5446,0...mp;languageId=1 where you can download more info on data cable set up...

I had the same problem with Win 98 with one of my previous Nokia Phones.
In the end I gave up with the nokia setup disc and used the Aol client instead, which does support nokia phones in the modem setup list.
Nokia's are fairly generic so most any nokia modem will do.

The problem may well be that your ISP is requiring a CLI (calling line identity) packet to be sent, as most Landline services require this, ie your internet access is tied to one phone line. It will not be possible to use a freephone number for access
using a mobile phone. You will need to access using an 0845 or similar non-geographic number.
Many such as NTL do not support mobile access, as do any that are tied to BT,as they have an aggregate agreement with BT.
Aol is one of a very few ISP's that allow mobile logons via a chargeable 0845 and is the sole reason I have kept my aol dial-up account .
Also I find oddly enough, that using the infra red connect between laptop and phone (also supported by the aol client) increases the throughput ...odd aint it.
However it's still horrendously slow at between 9k6 and 14k4.

Hope this helps

Steve.

I had similar problems trying to set this up myself. My mobile is with Vodafone and eventually I worked out that I needed a bit of software called "Vodafone Connect Me" which I downloaded from their web site. Once this was installed it all worked first time. Vodafone also give you the use of an outgoing mail server because your regular ISP's server usually won't accept connections from outside. Your incoming mail server should stay the same.

Hope this is of some help.

When you do get it working check the tarrif for GPRS rates. Some of them are astronomical and £3.50 per megabyte is no joke if you are getting loads of spam.

Are you sure the 3110 is data compatable? The fact that a data menu appears on the phone menu does not indicate that your model has a data compatability. I had a 6110 that I used with WIN98SE and the laptop succesfully. I now use a 6310i with the same set up. I found that the Modem driver was incompatable with the rest of the software in the Nokia Data Suite, so in the end just used the Modem driver.
It is essential to get the correct data lead: DLR-3P for the 6310i and DAU-9P for the 6110.
If you establish that your phone is data compatable, and have any doubt about the data lead, try connecting with IR.

I think you'll find that the 3100 does not have a modem - even though the software thinks it has!! I had the same problem with the 3200 -
