e bay bidding

With Hammersnipe you can get a free service, or pay for various levels of better service that presumably snipe later! I haven't a clue about what if hammersnipe comes up against auctionstealer or whatever.

The advantage is that you can set what you're willing to pay for something, then forget it - it'll only top the existing bid if it's within the limit you set, and won't place all your money if it's not necessary. The problem usually seems to be that the item's never worth what you thought in the first place!

Sniping with a program is really no different to sniping in person.
I'm a sniper, but I do it myself.

Since all sniping software can do is place a bid for you, if two people are using sniping software the one who typed in the highest maximum bid will outbid the other. Of course, that doesn't mean they'll win.

When I bid for my boat I figured out my maximum price and sat to wait and do the sums again when the auction got below 1 hour to go.
I bid with a few seconds left (I never leave it to the last second in case there's some unexpected lag on the networks the bid goes through - or an unexpected confirmation screen) with my maximum - there's no sense at all in doing multiple bids below maximum when sniping.

I think a lot of people misunderstand sniping. If you lose an item to a sniper, it's not because they were sniping, but because their maximum bid was higher than yours. Also I see nothing unethical about it - the eBay model is that everyone places a maximum bid and the highest bid wins. Everyone knows bids can be posted until the last second and should consider that in placing their bid if they aren't sniping. Don't bid more than you'd be willing to pay and just shrug your shoulders if someone was willing to pay more. You'll only lose by a tiny amount (one increment) if you were the 2nd place bidder, but that's how it always is.

I do it myself-decide through watching for a few months what something is really worth plus anything extra I might be prepared to stand and then set my maximum bid.
But I only put it in if I have the nerve! at about 5 seconds before end.
I also look for misplaced/obscure listings and those with akward finish times such as mid morning mid week or middle of night!
The time of the month or year is relevant as most people get paid at end of calendar month and lots of people are short of money after Christmas.
I have done very well out of this-A Tamaya sextant without a case for under £100;more recently a Davis Mark 15 for £10 needing new mirrors;A trailing log for about £50;a perfectly good laptop in need of a new cmos battery for £10.
If I miss something usually it doesnt bother me because it has gone for a silly price.

I let some one else have a Bosun dinghy needing the transom re-bonding, without trailer.
I thought it would be worth £50, but others thought it worth almost £80.

I missed a Mirror dinghy, complete and on a trailer which went for £62.
It was one of those selling for a friend, and in North Yorkshire. I literally missed it as although I had it on my watch list, I was out at the time it ended. I can't see any point in leaving a maximum bid on as you are just alerting those who will bid silly prices. If you dip in at the last moment they probably have no time to counter you, if you topped them.
