Has anyone with a Rival 32 or 34 replace the Dynastarter (starter-generator) with an alternator on the Volvo MD2B engine? If so what modifications to the companionway steps were done to accommodate the alternator.

I haqve seen it on a Vire here: Vire7 click the "hints & tips" link on the left, and then go to the electrical section...it's all in there somewhere

This link takes you directly to it without all the frames.

Thanks for the info. I check the link and it was very informative. My problem is that the Rival 32 companionway steps was not designed for the alternator to be installed on the Volvo MD2B engine. I have a spare engine with the alternator setup. I was hoping that someone had done this conversion and could provide some insight as to the results of modifying the companionway steps.

A vire engineer tried it on my engine but couldnt get the alternator to charge at the lower revs, so it all had to be abandonned, the theory looked good but in practice not.

I fitted an alternator to a Vire 6 a few years ago. Retained the dynastart for starting . I had to put a switch between the idiot light and alternator, because the drag of the alternator was too much at startup. Threw the switch in when the engine got going. It ran fine for years.

I replaced my dynastart a few years ago. I bought a new one at a very reasonable price from LSUK in leeds. I think there are other LSUK branches elsewhere. You may need to swap the end plates.
cheers

Just in case someone else is going through what I have over the past 3 weeks trying to track down a replacement dynastarter for the Volvo MD6a etc I wanted to make sure you know that a near perfect direct replacement can be had for less than US$300 from Oulet Ricambi in Milan. Turns out that the starter generator on the PIAGGIO APE TM MP 501 601 602 703 is the same as the Bosch. One hole on the mount needed to be drilled out less than 1mm!

I also found a direct replacement from HC Cargo for only $179 + freight.

Better than the US$700 some people want to charge for new old stock etc
