Hi All,

I've treated myself to a new dynastart and regulator but wanted to check with you Experts before I continue. This is how it's now wired up:

Dynastart (1).jpg

The dynastart is a direct replacement for the Bosch 11Amp 0.9kw 0010350005 unit and was made it Italy. It's very shiny.

The regulator is a modern solid state replacement from electrodynamicsolutions.com called the DVR4N. http://edsltd.ddns.net/dvr4-data.pdf

I'm ready to turn the key but since the instructions have come from several sources and the terminal labels don't match in the various different texts, I'd be grateful for second, third and maybe fourth opinions before I turn the key and blow the boat up.

Any help that you can give will be gratefully received.

Thanks,
Tim

FWIW these are the instructions supplied by Fairways Marine with the new type, solid state, regulator (Sorry if they appear sideways or upside down)

Your wiring diagram appears to agree with this

I never really understood the wiring on mind and it was further complicated by having a VSR and two batteries. It worked well, the charging rate isn't high but sufficient for my needs supplemented by a 20w solar panel.

Now you can see the wiring diagram Fairways supplied all should be clear although originally there was an electromagnetic regulator and cut out, similar to the old car dynamo control boxes , combined with the starter relay all in the same box

Yep, the old dynastart was not charging the batteries and when I took it apart, all the brush springs fell out. It was cheaper to replace with a new unit than send the old one off for repairs.

I have 2x50W solar panels which happily keep the batteries charged to 13.2v on short day sails but anything longer than a few hours or a night sail requires fossil fuel charging. By "night sail" I mean anything after 15:30 this time of year :)

I also have a 600W wind turbine but that's not much fun to have on at the pontoon or while we're sailing. Always worried that I'm going to loose an ear!

Mine had the old VW type regulator but a separate relay I think. I have some pics somewhere but not on my phone.

Hi Tim,

I am about to update my Volvo MD2 with the same parts. Did it all work out OK and was the wiring diagram correct?

Yours,

Laurie.

Hi Laurie,

Yes, it's working fine. Engine has now done 5.5 hours since the refit and it runs well and the batteries charge nicely.

Hope that helps.

There is more than one make and output of dynastart Volvo used Bosch’s and Albin but i think it was smaller and just to confuse Albin who actually built the MD6 used their own electrics on Ballads
Vire used another manufacturer Sibe? And fairways were the Vire dealers

Sorry to hijack this conversation, but could someone help me identify a recently purchased Dynastart at a Chichester boat jumble. It has some old paint on it that looks like Volvo green. The strange thing about it is that all the terminals are situated on the end plate. There are no terminals in the body, and there is no access plate or strip to get at the brushes. Anybody have any idea as to manufacturer please?

According to the info I have that is probably a Siba one. The Bosch ones had the terminals on the body

Thanks for that info. Any idea of possible age? I had investigated but could not find any dynastarter with the terminals on the back plate, not even an old one I found on an early HandyBilly. I have even asked a friend that has a model T Ford. He is quite an expert on such things be he could offer no clues either to manufacturer or age.
Thanks for the info,

I had one of those Siba ones as a retro fit on a Stuart Turner 8 HP. Probably early 1970's? Max charge is 9 amps, I seem to remember.
