We will shortly be venturing into the Dutch Canal System. There seems to be a real shortage of pilot guides, chart details etc etc for cruising the inland waters of Holland. Can anyone recommend particular books or a source of charts and books in the UK

the best ones are the ANWB charts like british waterways but in holland. If you let me know where you are entering I will let you know the letter of the first one you need, then get the rest in holland. They are widely stocked thro, out holland

We will be picking up a boat from the Stevens boatyard in Drachden in the Friesland district of North Holland. We anticipate initially cruising in that area for two to three weeks

you want chart B (Freise Meren) this covers from drachten to grou, sneekermeer, sneek,to the isselmeer and down to lemmer.you can get others most places when you know where you are going.a good book to buy is Through the Dutch and Belgian Canals by Philip Bristow. you are in for a treat! some lovely places to visit Lemmer,Sneek,. Sloten. You should be able to get the book and chart from marine booshops in uk.you also need to get the ANWB book its a "manual" of regulations in dutch but you have to carry it with you or you can get fined, altho. Ive never heard of anyone been asked for it.

Try the internet! I bought charts and almanacs a couple of years ago directly from Holland. Much cheaper then here and they arrived by mail in a couple of days

[/ QUOTE ] Don't know about getting fined but we certainly heard the owners of a visiting UK boat being given a stern ticking-off for not carrying it. Volume 1 concerns 'the law' and is obligatory. Volume 2 is the practical almanac equivalent and is very useful. Although it too is all in Dutch, you can very soon pick your way through it, identifying a wealth of information including bridge opening times, mooring facilities and charges and information about the towns you are visiting. Hope you enjoy the Netherlands.

when or if you head south and you come to Lemmer go into the canal that takes you thro, the town as its more interesting the "by-pass" canal (princess margriet) has a lock before entering the Isselmeer which is a pig if you are shorthanded as there is a concrete lip very low down.Dont underestimate the Isselmeer as it can get v. rough especially when wind is northerly.if you get to the south of the Markermeer, Muiden is a nice town with a good marina,if you go further south dont use the Amsterdam Rijn canal as its very commercial there is a lovely river called the Vecht which runs parallel. This was the original waterway before the Rijn canal was dug and the Dutch merchants built their houses there.Come out before you get to Utrecht and rejoin the Rijn canal. If I can be more help please feel free.

[/ QUOTE ] Agreed. But the marina is very expensive, the dearest overnight charge we have encountered anywhere in the Netherlands. €22 there whereas we normally get charged about €10 for a 15 metre boat. Even Sixhaven only wanted €17 and thats A'dam prices for you! Plus they charge another €5 for the Muiden lock.
