A friend of mine is looking to buy an old 17m dutch barge. Its being surveyed in the next couple of days. Assuming it surveys well and the surveyor says its fit for the passage he wants to get it from the R Brent to the Crouch. My take is that the Thames part would be best done with a skipper who knows the river and its peculiarities - tidal, legal, stop overs etc. Any recommendations ? it would be a paid job.

Maybe contact the harbour master at Chiswick Quay. He's experienced with moving barges, he spends a lot of time helping people in our marina moving their barges up and down the river, specifically through the tidal reaches.

I can PM you his details if you want. If he's not able to do it he will know someone that will.

I can offer my services...
I have just brought a 31m Dutch Barge from Harlingen (North Holland) to St Katherines. This was the fourth barge I have taken across the North Sea / English Channel this year and three other barges up and down the tidal Thames.
