Well we didn't get much time there unfortunately, and went mainly to look at the Absolute 56, which is very nice indeed.

Its a big show and they have some big boats

The boat that really impressed me was the Galeon 530, the mahogany looks a bit old hat in my view, but otherwise it had a great layout and seemed really well put together. If you don't want to wait for a Princess 54, or want to save a six figure sum, its worth a look.

The other one I really liked was the Fyord 40, sort of Wallyish, but you could actually imagine using one

Other than that I only took photos of a few more unusual things. Like a boat thats powered by a jet ski

and if you thought you had a flash barbeque then think again, this one floats and has an outboard and a mega sound system

Now I don't know if we should worry, but an enterprising German company is developing a submarine called a U-boat, they were talking about how keen they were to conquer the European market, or conquering something to do with Europe anyway

Thanks to Trev (Nautical) for arranging tickets and showing us over the Absolutes

No pics of Absolutes then?

We haven't seen any here in ages /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Nick, see you liked the Fjord too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hope you got back safe and sound.

BTW, your little one is just the cutest! and fast asleep the whole time, why isn't little Nautical so well behaved........she'd have had every button pressed and every twiddly thing broken in twenty mins flat:(

heehee

sepretly, I wouldn't have minded seeing some more pix of other boats that simply aren't seen in the uk. There are certainly aquarama copies in the med, quite a lot - and there are lots (or some) copies of classic yots too - in addition to things like Spirit i mean.

Think that seating area reconfigures into huge sunbed type thing, take your point would be hot with no bimini but maybe they have some option thing that allows that. Still I thought it was refreshing to see something different. Can't imagine ever seening one at SIBS or LIBS though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

thats a thought, what power do jet ski,s throw out? is the power unit any good as a wing engine? would be easy to fit if you had a decent size main rudder for steering.

brilliant reports have you any photos of the galeon 530,there is going to be one on display at the birmingham show in febuary that i have been invited to look at it will be the first one into the country regards david

Sorry, i'm a crap photographer and always forget that i've got a camera with me till 10 mins from the end. I think the Galeon has a fantastic amount of space for a 53 footer, big comfy saloon, seperate dinette, trendy curved stairway, full beam master cabin, and the flybridge has the best layout i've seen with a nice sociable eating area plus a sunpad big enough to house a womens net ball team, which is important for me in case I ever meet one.

Do NOT forget the camera if that happens /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Do you mind if i ask you a question?

I gather you are thinking about having your next boat in the Med, but why are you thinking about going for a Sportscruiser as agains't another Flybridge.
Surely a Fly offers better accomodation, and with being so far from home, would that not be more benificial?
The only thing i can think of, its possibly safer with a nipper onboard?

Cheers

We're looking at enclosed cockpit boats (ie. with a sliding roof and patio doors). The idea is that with the roof and doors closed its just like a flybridge saloon with comfy seating, and can be cooled and heated. When the weather is right then rather than going up on the flybridge you slide the roof and doors open. Like most things its a compromise, for sure it wont be as open or airy as a flybridge or conventional sport cruiser, but has the advantage of keeping everyone together on one level, having no steep stairs (as you say for the nipper), and being a bit less top heavy. We also decided we definitely wanted IPS, and there's no 50 feet flybridges using it yet, but there are some mid 50's hardtops.

Watch this space, should have some news very soon /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yip, i knew you'd explain it all very well, thanks.

I wasn't aware the Hardtop boats had patio doors(thought they were open back like sportcruisers), I can now understand it having a 'flybridge type' saloon.
I like the concept(your thinking), i like sportscruiser, and as you say being able to open the roof and the doors, should be just like boating on a fly or sportscruiser.

It all sounds very exciting, especially with IPS(presume with the joystick). I hope you find the boat you are looking for, and i can't wait too hear about it.
I can only ever dream about a boat like that, so i hope you will supply us with loads of pics of your new boat in the build.

Good luck,

Cheers

You can get both types of hard tops, with an open back or with patio doors. Windy even offer both options on the same boat on their 52.

With IPS its the joystick that is the main attraction, cos that extra manouverability when docking gives us the confidence to have a bigger boat. In fact fuel economy is towards the bottom of the list of benefits, 'cos it will take quite a while to repay the extra capital cost. The other benefits we really like are the lower noise and vibration, extra speed and acceleration, and the exhaust being three feet underwater so no soot on the back of the boat. If you haven't seen the DVD for IPS its worth a look. Maybe i'm easily influenced, but having watched it we removed all the non IPS boats from our list.

I haven't seen the IPS DVD, is it available from a dealer or Volvo? It would be interesting to see it, i do like the idea of IPS and the joystick by all media accounts,, does seem to take a lot of the stress and hassle out of docking, especially of boats this size. All of what you say sounds good!

Interestingly, i've just been browsing the Abs 56 website, option for engines,
Volvo Penta 3xIPS600 (3x435 HP)
Volvo Penta 2xIPS600 (2x435 HP),
(Possibly Q. for Trev)Would 3xIPS really work, surely there can't be much space for them all??

Cheers

Yes it does work although to be fair it does end up being a squezze between the engines but then again it depends on how hands on you want to be, there aint a hell of alot us numpty types can do with modern engines except oil and filter changes and daily checks anything more serious and its Mr VP man.

The main benefit is that we can achieve 40 knts with just 1300hp instead of the normal 2200hp you would expect so a huge saving in fuel never mind the acceleration is hot poop and handles like a boat much smaller than its size.

Joy stick is quite trick once activated it controls the outboard engines and leaves the third one at idle, push the button and it kicks back in again. A doddle to berth even for me!.

We had some trim problems with the prototype as Volvo wanted all three legs to be at the same level so exhaust back pressure was the same for all three engines. To achieve this we had to recess the third leg in a tunnel which then had the effect of loosing some of the dynamic lift from the rear of the hull. The effect was that the boat ran at anything below 30 knts with about ten degrees of bow up without trim added. We have always prided ourselves on the ride quality of the boats and how level they run so this was not acceptable for us. Back to drawing board and now no.3 is spot on, we reduced the tunnel, repositioned the tankage and genset and anything heavy that could affect the trim and hey presto she now runs with about 4 degrees of bow up, touch of tab and bobs your uncle.

I was about to say, why didn't they just put bigger engines in and stick with 2, but i've just been onto the VP site, and it looks like the 600 is the biggest.

How much more performance does the 3 set up give than the 2? I can't honestly see how it would be worthwhile! But then, what do i know, its probably most common config you sell for that boat! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just been watching Captain Mike's tutorial on the VP site, looks good. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cheers
