A couple of weeks ago we were talking about boat shows with some sailing friends. Probably due to the influence of some good ale, I commented that a visit to Dusseldorf might be an interesting change from Excel.

SWMBO is quite enthusiastic about the idea, particularly as we could tie it in with seeing an old college chum of hers who lives not far away from Dusseldorf.

So, is the show worth the trek to Deutschland?

I've been there a few times and it's (like many things in Germany) enormous...
I've never been to Excel, but from what I've read about that, it's much smaller.
Boot Düsseldorf is a real experience, though not a thing to do every year. The nice thing is you see the (almost) whole repertoire from many yachtbuilders. They also dedicate halls to sailing and powerboating.
There are one or two halls where you can buy enough 'stuff' to sink your boat.

In short, go for it!
The bad news is you have to wait for almost a year as the show is held in January.

Cheers,

Arno

It's excellent. So large that you cannot possibly see it all in a day, unless you concentrate on only yachts and, say, chandlery. There are separate halls for sub-aqua, fishing, canoeing, sailboards, then something like three halls of boats, one on yachts only, several halls of electronics and other equipment manufacturers and loads of chandlery to buy. Much of the chandlery on sale is different from what is seen on almost every stand at LIBS, so it gives some purpose in going.

On top of that, communications from the airport and railway station are frequent and included in entry ticket price. It's not too expensive to get in and the food is good, if you like sausages and beer!

Yes, we've checked the dates on the website. We knew it was in January, so we're doing a bit of long-range planning......

I used to go there for a couple of years and thought it most certainly worth while. As others mentioned it is enormous and it pays to get the catalogue in advance and select what you want to see. I can read german and did not have a problem, but don't know if there is an english edition. Should be worth finding out.

Not too worried, as SWMBO has good German, having studied the language and worked there. So she'll have to chat up all those nice young chaps on the stands.

Errm, perhaps I'l rethink that.....

Addendum

SWMBO has pointed out that as the show is close to her birthday, I can buy her a present at the show.

She said a Najad would do nicely..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
